Sex mad Labrador pup /middle aged dog bad back

We've never had such a randy bitch, spaniels nothing like as bad.

The problem is she's nine months, 25 kilos, he's a middle aged spaniel 16 kilos with a dodgy back. She keeps presenting to him, when he sits on his sofa she's sitting on his face or back.

He's kinda interested but hasn't a clue which exacerbates matters. Last night I put her on a lead otherwise there'd be no peace in the sitting room. She had to sleep in the kitchen. He howled this morning when I locked her in the kitchen so that I could shower.

Advice needed please

Keep them apart until her season finishes?

justasking111 · 04/01/2024 19:42

How. We're in a bungalow there's nowhere to hide. I've put her on a lead again, she's up on the sofa with me, he's on the other sofa. So peace reigns for now. I've still got some of his painkillers from the vet so he's had one earlier.

I would keep them completely separate until her season finishes before your old boy gets badly hurt. Use babygates or closed doors if you have to.

I am keeping them separate when there's noone around. They'd both be over a baby gate in a flash.

At what age can she be spayed?

Is this her first season? If so in about 3 months

Their spay window starts 11-12 weeks after end of season. Speak to your vet and get her booked in.

The actual time they're willing to mate is quite short, usually lasts less than a week IME. So hopefully she will calm down soon.

justasking111 · 04/01/2024 22:04

So a year old isn't too young to spay?

Personally I wouldn't spay or neuter a large breed dog until they were fully grown, so for Labradors that's probably around the 2 year mark.

tizwozliz · 05/01/2024 16:29

I would personally let her have two seasons if she's had her first season at 9 months.

That's what we did for our lab, and we'll do the same with current pup (she's just finished her first season at 9 months)

Our lab was spayed at 6 months old.

The fact you have a male in the household is obviously an indicator for getting it done sooner rather than later. Any vet will agree to it.

The latest research suggests that past 11 months is best for female labs.

Thanks all. She has hurt the old boy today. He's moping. Last night she 💩 all over the kitchen despite being out at midnight. I'll book her in for the operation in three months time. She's sat here on a lead again. 😒

Having a male in the house isn't a good reason to get a bitch spayed early.

Vets may do it but that doesn't mean it's the right thing for the dog.

Cece92 · 05/01/2024 17:20

My lab was spayed in august when she turned one. The vet said from 6 months but did recommend a season. She was on the wait list for 3 months before an appointment became available. I put her on the wait list during her season. The vet said that getting them spayed does reduce any female related cancers. She usually gets walked off less up the bing but had to be on lead as a few male dogs came out of nowhere (usually shy/nervous dogs) I'd phone the vet if you don't want pups xxx

Get dog gates instead of babygates, they’re taller so your dog can’t get over them
