French Bulldogs - Why so much negativity on here?

FrenchieBFan · 04/01/2024 13:07

Following on from a different thread, I noticed a lot of negativity surrounding French Bulldogs - as a Frenchie Owner (Had my first for 13 Years, now have x2 more aged 3 and 6) ) I have only heard bad things on here. All of ours have been pedigree / KC Registered with long, long bloodline. Never faced any Health issues, my first old girl lived a fantastic long life and our current two are a delight. They're funny, faithful, somewhat lazy and adored by everyone we meet on walks and activities.
Is there really so many horror stories out there surrounding the breeding and health?

I don't like their hideously deformed faces. All skin folds and rasping breathing, poor little buggers. Their bodies are so deformed that they can't do normal natural doggy activities like swimming. Why everyone starting buying them in 2010 I really don't know - were they on the television the same way that everyone bought huskies after watching Game of Thrones?

SnufflyBunny · 04/01/2024 16:55

I adore my frenchie and will now forever refer to her as a farty house potato (thank you @FartSock5000 )

However, she's a rescue and I would never condone buying one. She has awful skin and gut conditions, she's housebound in temps over 20 degrees and under 5 degrees. Plus she hurt her back doing NOTHING and seeing her in that much pain for 2-3 months was awful. She costs us a fortune and I don't begrudge a penny but my goodness, they shouldn't be bred any more.

DidiAskYouThough · 04/01/2024 16:59

Anyone who truly loves the breed should be a strong advocate for them to be made extinct over time, it’s highly unethical to advocate for such a deformed mutation to continue breeding more and more suffering. Same for other brachycephalic dogs.

Alloveragain3 · 04/01/2024 17:00

Surely as a long term owner you're well aware of the various chronic health conditions affecting the majority of Frenchies, that greatly reduce their quality of life?

Seems like you've asked a goady question in the hopes of getting a reaction.

Holland have introduced a great new legislation banning snub nosed Frenchies.

I'm always jolly and positive when I come across any dog on a walk.

You wouldn't say 'oh, your dog is a monstrosity and you sir, are a disgrace'.

Neriah · 04/01/2024 17:20

Just because a dog is bred to KC standards doesn't mean that is a good thing.

Actually, we can go further. The deliberate deformities which underpin the many health problems of these dogs were bred into them by the efforts of the Kennel Club. Nobody recall the German Shepherd that couldn't walk? The Kennel Club originated as the purview of entitled gentlemen who wanted to experiment with evolutionary science. The only thing that has changed is that they let women in. They are still experimenting with breeding to standards and traits that have absolutely nothing to do with cannine welfare or norms. A mammal - any mammal - is supposed to be able to breathe. Any selective breeding that diminishes that ability is not just wrong, it is cruelty. And it's a bit late now for the KC to jump into the game pretending that they played no part in all this, or that breeding animals that can breath just a little bit better is showing appropriate concern for the decades of misery that they have brought in these dogs.

EdithStourton · 04/01/2024 17:27

OP, you say your dog lived to be 13. That is honestly not a great age for a dog of that size. Our farm-bred JRT lived to be 15 - another 2 years. That doesn't sound a lot but it's a 15% difference, like a human dying at 65 rather than almost 75, for example. My parents had a dog of a similar size who made it to 17 with minimal vet care.

The frenchies I see around usually have lovely personalities, but their risk of health issues is just huge.

hattie43 · 04/01/2024 17:29

I have two frenchies , both well bred without health problems and love a good long walk .
I have never had dogs who have made me laugh so much , such clowns .

Yes, exactly. I tell all dogs that they're my favourite, it would be rude not to. But I really wouldn't want a brachycephalic dog, and feel sorry for many that I see.

SunflowerSeeds123 · 04/01/2024 17:35

I'd rather have a Heinz 57 with a good temperament and spot-on health than pursue a breed already known to have problems. I think buying these dogs is cruel.

FrenchieBFan · 04/01/2024 17:37

@DidiAskYouThough That's right, I'm not replying to my Thread simply because I'm working. Not everyone on here has the time to reply to every comment, every time one is posted. That's not to say I won't, but when I have the time. Off you go Pop Grin

You must have had a bit of an outlier if it lived until 13 years old. The Royal Veterinary College reports dogs with the lowest average ages as -

  1. French Bulldog (4.53 years)
  2. English Bulldog (7.39)
  3. Pug (7.65)
  4. American Bulldog (7.79)
  5. Chihuahua (7.91)
  6. Husky (9.53)
  7. Beagle (9.85)
  8. Boxer (10.4)
  9. German Shepherd (10.16)
  10. Cavalier King Charles Spaniel (10.45)

It is no surprise the top 4 are brachycephalic dogs that have been bred to emphasise deformities of compressed skeletons to give them their desirable "funny" characters, but also a world of discomfort and pain. It is heart-breaking how common these poor dogs are since social media brought them in as a "fashion item" for irresponsible owners, ds did a school essay on them and think they went from 3k KC registrations to 35k in the space of just a few years. A KC registration does not mean a healthy dog - it just means it has been bred from another pedigree deformed dog.

The breeds should be banned and we (humans and especially the KC) should be ashamed of condoning breeding such unhealthy dogs to suffer in the name of being adorable. There are plenty of studies that will educate you on the problems with these breeds much better than a parenting site.

Yes, I agree, and you wonder OP, why people are "negative" towards a breed that lives for only 4 years and has a multitude of health problems throughout their life? seems quite obvious to me why people wouldnt be super positive about that.

FrenchieBFan · 04/01/2024 17:40

@Alloveragain3 Not goady whatsoever, just striking a conversation out of interest. I'm ready to be educated and listen to other opinions and facts. Not everything is goady on Mumsnet. Some of us are genuine!

You have 3 French Bulldogs, surely you did some research before buying them?

Coffeespill · 04/01/2024 17:43

They look ugly and have been bred so much it is causing difficulties

Yes I would have hoped you'd researched the breed!

FrenchieBFan · 04/01/2024 17:44

@EdithStourton Going by the overall opinion on here, 13 is a good age for my Frenchie to have lived! She was a great companion and we had no health issues with her whatsoever until sadly and quickly she died of Cancer. Lots of my Family have had JRTs, they are little powerhouses and live to fantastic ages!

Bred to die basically

DidiAskYouThough · 04/01/2024 17:47

‘Off you go Pop’? Nah.

FrenchieBFan · 04/01/2024 17:47

@Whinge Don't be ridiculous, of course I have but are we not all open to learning more about something? Or is that not allowed?

@DidiAskYouThough 'Nah' - Translation please?

It means pop. Any thoughts on the the links and insightful comments other posters have taken the time to post? Or just being combative?

AnnaMagnani · 04/01/2024 17:52

You really think you aren't being goady and then reply to someone with 'Off you pop'

It's about the goadiest thing you can say.

FrenchieBFan · 04/01/2024 17:56

Pop was clearly a typo, 'Nah' is ill educated and hideous.
