I have the loveliest dog in the world. He's a shih tzu. He's 10kg but not overweight, he's very long! He has wet tray food and I give him 1/3 at 9am and 1/3 at 5pm.
Some days he's not bothered and doesn't touch it, other days he's going back to his bowl and licking it. Should I give him more food?
He does like treats and human foods but I try to keep this in check and he doesn't have loads.

Thanks

He's walked for average 45mins to 1 hour a day.

Do you have a photo?

Appetites vary from day to day. If he's a healthy weight I wouldn't want to make any drastic changes really

IngGenius · 02/01/2024 09:10

How much in weight are you giving your dog?
How much is 1/3 of a tray and what brand?

It is generally better to feed a smaller amount and the dog eat regularly then eat loads and then not eat for a while.

It's harringtons. Each tray is 400g. So probably about 140g per serving.
He's not touched his food today and has been sick, bless him.

Of the dog, sorry!

I have to say that sounds quite a lot of food for a 10kg dog.

For comparison my beagle is also fed Harringtons and he gets a small handful of dry at breakfast, 1/4 of a tray plus a handful of dry at lunch, and another small handful in the evening before bed.

margotrose · 02/01/2024 12:33

He weighs double what yours does - 20.5kg.

cheeseisthebest · 02/01/2024 12:34

Oh shit am I giving him too much then? He doesn't have any dry food.

So 260g wet food in 24 hours. Nothing else.

I'm no expert but if he's regularly not finishing his meals or even touching them, I'd say you need to either look at what you're feeding or the amounts you're feeding. Given that he wolfs the food down sometimes, I'd wager it's the amounts that are the problem.

I wouldn't worry about him being hungry because he's going back to lick the bowl, many dogs will do that no matter how much you put in there!

cheeseisthebest · 02/01/2024 12:39

Thank you. He's just often not that bothered and would prefer human food or treats. Which I dont give him.
Then other days he wants more, licks the bowl, gives me puppy eyes and eats all the crap off the kitchen floor!!

Like @IngGenius said, it's generally best for a dog to get smaller meals that they finish rather than larger meals that they can't finish or leave completely.

So you could try cutting down the amount slightly (maybe do 1/4 per meal instead of 1/3) or keep with the 2/3's per day but split it over more meals.

margotrose · 02/01/2024 12:42

Oh those eyes! He is very cute Grin

cheeseisthebest · 02/01/2024 17:11

That's really helpful thank you.
Yes he's very cute!! He's very loved!

Harringtons website say 1 or 2 trays a day for a 10kg dog!

cheeseisthebest · 02/01/2024 18:20

Oh yes I think I remember reading that and thinking it sounded like loads??!

It's insane isn't it? That's nearly 1kg of food a day!

cheeseisthebest · 02/01/2024 18:54

Maybe that was what made me think I wasn't giving him enough!
