Dogs in hotels

If you're staying in a hotel, dogs allowed, is it OK to let your dog sit on the public furniture, such as a sofa in the bar?

No, I wouldn't.

Normally my dogs only see the bedroom and the way in/out for their walk/s.

I do allow them on the bed as that is what they are used to at home, and I bring a clean blanket for the top of the bed.

I also bring a bowl, scrubbing brush and disinfectant just incase of a wee accident.

Welshphoenix · 01/01/2024 18:12

personally I do not let my dog sit on the furniture in hotels in the public spaces and bring throws for the sofa / bed on our room and i stay in hotels with my dog very regularly, However we have just come home from a hotel where we spent Christmas and the hotel staff were telling people it was ok to let the dogs on the furniture in the communal areas as they were truly a dog friendly hotel, however very few of the customers actually allowed there pets to jump on the sofa's ect

sonjadog · 01/01/2024 18:15

Any hotel I have stayed at with my dog has not allowed them in public areas. The dog has to stay in the bedroom.

Whatineed · 01/01/2024 18:16

I stay in a lot of pet friendly hotels in Europe and I've only ever seen small dogs sat on sofas, either in handbag carriers or on their cushions.

I carry a roll up travel bed that you can fling over your shoulder like a handbag and use this on the floor of bars and restaurants we are allowed into. It gives my dog his "place" under the table or next to seating areas.

He's sat outside once on a plastic chair at an espresso bar, because he was scared of the noisy mopeds, but again he was on his travel bed.

QueenofLouisiana · 01/01/2024 18:17

I don’t. I wouldn’t have been happy to sit on the sofa by the fire in the hotel bar I went into this morning. A small dog came straight in from a walk on the nearby water meadows and jumped up. Nothing was done by owners about shooing it off or putting down a blanket. I’d have been upset to sit on the muddy patch later.

Arrestedforit · 01/01/2024 18:23

I do think it's inconsiderate, it's a staffie, perfectly polite but sprawling on a velvet sofa, and the only hound around in the public areas. ( not an assistance dog for sure) I've seen lots coming in with their owners bringing bedding etc for their rooms, but to be honest the entitlement is grossing me out.
By the way I do have my own hound, happily at home with a family member.

Absolutely not. I've just stayed in a large hotel that had lots of dogs and owners staying, and we didn't see one on the furniture in the public areas.

That type are few and far between now or maybe we choose hotels that allow access everywhere I don't know , but we are always allowed to take the dog in all parts of the hotel, occasionally not the restaurant but then allow them in the lounge whilst the owners are eating. Thank goodness as we go away every other weekend with our dog

margotrose · 01/01/2024 20:00

My dog lies quietly under the table or by my side if we go out for food somewhere - it would be the same in a hotel.

MissyB1 · 01/01/2024 20:04

It’s a dog friendly hotel, the hotel will decide if dogs are allowed in the furniture. It’s not for you to like or dislike OP. You didn’t bring your dog, that’s up to you, but don’t judge what’s happening with the dogs that are staying there.

IGotItFromAgnes · 01/01/2024 20:08

.It’s not for you to like or dislike OP

So OP shouldn’t have an opinion? And it shouldn’t be a factor in whether she decides to stay there again, or write a review pointing out dogs are allowed on the furniture?

I’m mildly allergic so wouldn’t knowingly go to a dog-friendly hotel, but most people I know with dogs don’t let them on furniture and would be put off by a hotel that allowed dogs there.

This surprises me, as I stay at hotels frequently, but have never experienced it! Maybe it is a regional thing.

I am not sure I would like it if dogs were allowed everywhere in a hotel. Not sure I really want to relax beside a strange dog in the lounge or eat my dinner in a restaurant with a lot of dogs on the floor. But I guess it is good that it is possible for those who are happy with that.

We travel all over England and Wales and rarely at the same Hotel so not a regional thing I don't think. But as I said possibly it is that we would not chose to go somewhere the dog can't be with us everywhere we go. We don't leave her alone at home and certainly wouldn't somewhere strange. Luckily there ar hotels to suit all of us. Happy new year to you x

@MissyB1
Of course I can dislike it. It's a fecking dog not a child that can't left alone. I have no idea if it's been wormed or flea treated, and if it's arse and paws have been wiped.

I really dislike seeing dogs on furniture in hotels, pubs, cafes. I just don't see why they need to be on furniture. We've had dogs for years and take them in hotels and pubs etc regularly, but keep them off furniture and out of people's way. I think it's just good manners to do so.

I’m guessing the hotel make the rules not you. So yes you can dislike it but hard luck really eh? You could always choose to go elsewhere.

We recently stayed in a gorgeous gastro pub type place in Wales, it had 10 rooms. The owner specifically said our dog could sit on the leather couches with us. She had pride of place on the Chesterfield in front of the log burner

I think that sort of dog-friendliness should definitely be advertised prominently on websites, so people can avoid / select based on their own preferences!

BrimfulOfMash · 01/01/2024 21:59

No.

And this is why I don’t stay in accommodation where dogs are allowed, because even if it is requested that dogs do not lie on the beds (some) owners will disregard this.

vjg13 · 02/01/2024 11:17

We always try to stay in holiday lets where dogs aren't allowed. Our dogs go to kennels when we are on holiday and I have absolutely no wish to sit or sleep where inconsiderate dog owners have allowed their pets.

survivingunderarock · 02/01/2024 12:16

I personally don't - although my dog is very small so I will put her on my lap if it's easier for others - if it's busy etc or there are other dogs who won't leave her alone.

In holiday lets we take covers for the furniture if they say dogs are allowed on it but still wouldn't let her on the bed.

Dogs don't generalise so they don't tend to do well left in strange places even if they are fine at home. If we'd stayed in a B&B for the odd night where dogs weren't allowed downstairs then we have taken in turns to eat.

Oooh can you give a link or details? That sounds fab.
