My parents expect me to look after their dog for a month whilst their away on holiday.
I have a small dog of my own - theirs is bigger than a lab, he's a rescue dog from abroad. Highly strung, likes to run off and sheds a lot!!
We've had him stay for 10 nights which was hard work!!
He likes to be on the furniture/beds etc which I'm not a fan of! My little dog goes on the sofa but she's tiny, he's like a Shetland pony and so it gets a bit much.
He's lovely but I cannot contemplate a whole month, 2 dogs, 2 kids and a full time (stressful) job and all the extra cleaning etc.
my mum has kicked off after I asked for them to put him in kennels for a week out of the 4 they are going for to give me a break. Said I have hurt their feelings and she's stopped taking to me all over Christmas. They have plenty of cash so it's not a financial problem.
I think they are asking too much of me - am I being unreasonable? Just need someone else's opinion!!

Imo agree to have him. Put him in the kennels for 4 weeks. Dm can pay when she collects him. Unless she does free childcare for your dc endlessly she is a cf...

I work from home so never ask for childcare, parents look after the kids only when they want to no pressure from me

YANBU.
We have active dogs and I would not inflict them for more than a day on any of the DC without offering to pay and being prepared to take no for an answer.

ACynicalDad · 30/12/2023 23:31

saying no is perfectly reasonable

AloneIsGood · 30/12/2023 23:41

Just say no. Anyone's dog for a month is a big ask, let alone one that you find difficult already.

SirChenjins · 30/12/2023 23:48

Not unreasonable at all - that’s far too big an ask. I love my dog dearly and think he’s the best thing since sliced bread but wouldn’t dream of landing him on someone for a month. Your mum is a cf.

TheSecretaryBird · 30/12/2023 23:56

Not unreasonably at all. You have offered to have him for 3 of the weeks with a week in kennels which is a good balance.

Personally I wouldn’t be going away without the dog for a month. We have 3 dogs and I really struggle going away without them so our holidays are based around them. We do have some local kennels that we use and trust for times when we have a family event which we wouldn’t take them to.

I don’t really like asking other people to look after my dogs because it’s such a big ask - especially if they are big, hairy, endless energy, untrained etc (we have 3 very fit sports dogs and we know the kennels can cope with them).

It’s hard work looking after someone else’s dog so definitely stick to your guns - three weeks is more than generous
