New puppy advice

Just looking for some advice as unsure what to think.
I bought a puppy and brought him home the 16th of December he's such a gorgeous puppy and we're all besotted with him. I noticed straight away he had rather runny poo but kind of put it down to stress from leaving his mum and litter pups. I kept him on the same food as he was on before he came too important to note. By day 2 I noticed his stools where getting worse and has streaks of blood in and mucous. I contacted the breeder and she said he's fine his sister had been the same it's a reaction to his vaccinations. The next day it just got worse to the point he wasn't really wanting go eat and if he wasn't asleep he would be pooing. I took him the vets and they seen it with there own eyes as he had projectile diarrhoea 3 times whilst there. They said if they kept him in he would run the risk of catching parvo so it was in his best interest not too and they advised worming him and giving him a pro biotic to line his stomach. Now 3 days later he was still no better so I contacted the breeder and she said to bring him back she will take him to her vets and do everything she can to make him better so i thought it was in his best interest to do so as she said she has had dogs all her life. Within 20 minutes of me dropping him off she texted me a picture of a poo that had been nothing like his poo in colour texture or size and she said there's nothing wrong with him. I find it pretty miraculous that this could be the case so she's had him for 2 days now and Is sticking with saying he's only pooing 2 times a day and he's fine but when we had him for the 10 days we did he was having diarrhea squirts up to 40 times a day. I've asked for proof in the form of a video of him actually passing solid stool and she still hasn't. The pictures she is sending me looks nothing like the poo he had been passing. She advertised him as a health checked healthy puppy and that is not what I got. I am reluctant to just take her word for it and go him back up and get further attached to him if he has health problems as he I have 2 small children and can't commit to a sick puppy I didn't pay 1000 pound to bring home a sick puppy. I have also caught the breeder out on some white lies and just now do not trust a thing she's saying. She text me earlier on saying can you come pick him up as she has kids and can't deal with the mess of the poo witch I then replied I thought he only had 2 solid poos a day since being with you. Something just doesn't add up and just wondering what other people would do in my shoes or any advice? It wasn't easy taking him back as we really have fell in love and if I know dogs can have health problems and if in a year of two that was the case then I'd deal with that but the fact is she advertised him as a healthy health checked pup and that is not what we received. Sorry for the long post but wanting some advice

Sounds like a shit breeder all round, having puppies so close to Christmas is a huge red flag.
”Health checking” means nothing really. Genetic testing of the parents yes, but health testing doesn’t really have a definition.

Id walk away from this one. Do some research into ethical breeders (ideally go through an approved breed club to help you find one) and try again, I think this sounds like it has the potential to be an expensive disaster.

We had a puppy that had explosive diarrhoea. We were advised to buy purina gastro intestinal food and feed little and often (starting with a teaspoon full an hour n working up to a full tin a day. It's 12 months ago now, but iirc it took 24 hours to see an improvement and then 3 days for her to have normal poos. We mixed it with her regular food for an extra couple of days, and then all was well.

You could speak to your vet about it and see what they say.

Chicken and rice always help our dogs with any stomach issues. The poor puppy- you've given him back to someone who sounds awful and won't take proper care of him. 😔

All a "health checked puppy" means is that the puppy has been briefly checked by a vet at some point in its' life. It's no guarantee that your puppy is actually healthy or that it came from healthy parents.

Unfortunately it sounds like your breeder was a bit dodgy and the poor puppy is now suffering the consequences of that. All you can really do now is either commit to the puppy and do what it takes to get it healthy, or return it to the breeder, accept you made a mistake and start over again.

Personally I would try and do what I could to keep the puppy out of that breeders' hands but I also don't have small children to worry about.

We had months of this with our puppy

Puréed pumpkin (can buy in tins) with every feed firms the stool up. A good probiotic from the vet. Lots of fluids . No treats other than plain chicken.

She has had no problems as an adult but it was very tiring looking after a puppy with a poorly gut.

Did the vet not suggest a feacal test? Runny poos are really common in a rehoused puppy, certainly no reason to send back to the breeder

What is on your puppy contract? Does it not cover issues like this? "Health checked" means nothing. Puppies do get upset tums, often things calm down once they are fully grown and can move on to less rich adult food. And it is good that the vet didn't diagnose him with parvo. But what else has she been lying about? I don't think it is unreasonable for you both to go to her vets and see what their opinion is, and who is financially responsible, not ideal if you aren't local. I can see the argument of not wanting the pup to go back if you don't think they would be looked after but IF this is an irresponsible breeder and you keep the puppy whatever she has received payment with no consequences which will encourage them to do it again

We had this with our dog as a puppy. We got him at 9 weeks from a woman who said that her son was allergic. A lie I now think, as he was suffering from diarrhea and sickness. After back and forth from the vet it was eventually discovered that he had cryptosporidium infection. Tried various drugs, and a very plain diet of steamed white fish and mashed sweet potato. He eventually came goodish, and is a big strong 7 year old now.

However, it was touch and go, and a long road. And he has been left with a very sensitive tummy, and poor immune system. He is always on the edge of tummy upset, is prone to itchy skin and had had anal furunculosis twice, and furunculosis on his snout. This is linked to allergy/poor immunity.

I don't think he will be ever completely well, and so much is now not covered by insurance. Basically anything related to digestion, allergy or skin.

I think he was badly bred, and was kept in poor conditions as a young pup, and was separated too young from his mum. I think his early life experience has a lot to do with his poor health. Obviously I don't have any science to back this up, its just a feeling.

Why are you supporting dodgy breeders OP.

Tygertiger · 01/01/2024 19:54

What breed is the puppy, where did you get it from (how did you find the breeder) and what was the set-up like? Did the breeder quiz you on what your experience with dogs is and what kind of home you can provide?

I ask as it sounds like a very poor breeder so more info would help to advise whether you should put this down as an expensive mistake and walk away (and possibly report the breeder to the council).
