Sensitive topic euthanasia injection to the heart

I lost my lab in boxing day suddenly. He vomited during the night which we cleaned and offered water.
Then he started vomiting large amounts of blood. We rushed him to the vets but it was too late he had lost 3 quarters of his blood and was hemorrhaging, they tried to put him to sleep but his veins collapsed .
They then took him off my husband and said he couldn't be with him and put him to sleep by injecting him into the heart as they couldn't find a vein.
I'm absolutely devastated at how much he suffered, and that we weren't with him at the end .
Everything I have googled has said he should never of been injected into the heart as it is barbaric and extremely painful?
Is that why my husband wasn't allowed in ? Why would they do that? Was it really necessary.
I can't get any answers from the vet , and the fact they are offering to waive the on call vet fee is making me suspicious.
Please be kind as I'm in bits as it is , but does anyone know if this is normal ? Or has my boy suffered more than he needed to?

It's sometimes the only choice. I'm so sorry. Our old Westie fell in the pond and suffered a partial drowning. All they could do was inject straight into the heart because there were no veins and he would otherwise have suffered a prolonged painful death.

I hope the traumatic memories fade in time and you can remember your lovely dog as you knew him.

A vet near me was struck off as he was found to be doing this routinely. So sorry for your loss and the fact it was in these circumstances 😞 No idea what they’re meant to do if there aren’t any obvious veins. Surely there is some alternative? You would think anyway

margotrose · 28/12/2023 20:25

Sometimes there is genuinely no choice, and I suspect they got your husband to leave the room as they knew it wouldn't be a peaceful ending, but just the better of two options.

I am so sorry x

Honeyroar · 28/12/2023 20:29

I’m so, so sorry. That sounds very traumatic for you all. I’m sure they only did that because his veins were probably difficult to find if he’d lost so much blood. They probably went into the heart because it was the quickest way to stop him suffering. And they probably didn’t let your husband in because it perhaps wouldn’t have been nice to watch? I think you have to try to stop the questions in your head for your own sanity. Everyone did the best they could in, what sounds like, a traumatic moment where there really was no time to waste. I would hope that your boy was weak and losing consciousness, so hopefully not aware of what was happening.

Huge hugs to you. I lost one of my labs quite suddenly a few years ago, and it haunted me for a bit. Be kind to yourselves. Try to think of the good times and put this out of your head if you can. I know it’s easy to say. I’d ask for a post mortum though.

I’m so sorry for your loss. I have no idea about this but didn’t want to read and run. Do they know what caused the internal bleeding !? How scary

DrFoxtrot · 28/12/2023 20:56

I know it's the Doghouse, but my beloved cat was put to sleep in the same way as he was so dehydrated that they couldn't find a vein. I was present and it was peaceful and not painful for him.
I wonder if it was the general situation that was traumatic with him bleeding and that it would have looked even more traumatic to have this injection. I'm sorry for your loss.

Whoonearthevenareyou · 28/12/2023 20:57

I am so sorry for the loss of your beloved pet. I have no idea about this way of putting a pet to sleep but the vet would have done the best thing for your precious dog. They aren't in the business of causing unnecessary suffering and whatever was done was to help your dog be free . I'm sure that as he was so ill and had lost so much blood he was probably unaware of what was going on . I know you will be torturing yourself but please try and remember whatever happened the best outcome for your dog will have been paramount.

I’m so sorry for your loss. Dogs are absolutely your family and it’s heartbreaking :(
sorry I have no idea the actual answer to your question however completely understand looking for answers xx

DrCoconut · 28/12/2023 21:13

My cat had to be injected this way to end his suffering. I was allowed to be there and it was peaceful. I don't know if the fact that it is not automatically traumatic helps any. Sorry for your loss, its a horrible situation to be in.

DrCoconut · 28/12/2023 21:15

I should add "in comparison to the more usual method", of course losing a pet is very upsetting under any circumstances.

Manifestival · 28/12/2023 21:24

I have no advice or experience, but just wanted to say sorry for your loss 💔

survivingunderarock · 28/12/2023 22:22

I’m sorry. One of my cats was put to sleep in this way as his heart had failed and they couldn’t raise a vein. His suffering was ended more quickly and he did just slip away peacefully.

So yes, it can be a way it’s done if they can’t find a vein. They don’t necessarily suffer.

Lizzieregina · 28/12/2023 22:26

I’m so sorry.

And I hope the people who’ve shared that their pets passed peacefully after this method can give you a little comfort that your beloved boy did not suffer .

evrey · 29/12/2023 08:01

Thank you so much for all of your kind words. Especially the ones whose beloved pets were also pts this way , I'm glad it was still peaceful
