Stranger has just filmed me and my dog

We have a 8 month old Labrador. She has good and bad days when it comes to recall, we are still working on it.

i take her down to a large green near my house which is usually empty and don’t often see anyone else and we practice our recall. Today we were there and there was a man with a dog sitting on a bench quite far away from us( could just about make them out) Anyone I let my dog off the lead to practice our recall. Typical she was having a bad day today and wasn’t listening well, so I was calling her name a lot, shouting for her. 2 other dogs appeared out of no where also off their leads. My dog ran over to them (she wasn’t listening to me) she said hello to them and was playing with them. I apologised to the owner and we were chatting for about 5 mins while the dogs ran around.

anyway as we were leaving the green, I was struggling to put the slip rope lead back on the dog was jumping etc. I look up, and that guy that was sitting in the corner of the green was in his car window down filming me and my dog!
he was talking to the camera saying how this large dog is out of control, this lady cannot control her dog yet still lets it off the lead…. I’ve watched this dog attack 2 other dogs, owner has been calling her dog and the dog doesn’t listen etc. I was saying what are you talking about the dogs were saying hello and playing, she’s a puppy we are practising our recall etc.

he was saying I’ve got your whole walk on video as evidence, I’ve got an XL bully and he is much better behaved and controlled then your dog…….

he then drove off. My gosh I am SO upset I can’t stop crying about it.

im trying my hardest with this puppy and it’s been hard. But she is a good girl and by no means out of control. She’s sooooo friendly and playful. It just hurts to hear someone observing thinks your dog is out of control, like I’m basically doing a shit job.

im also concerned about what he is going to do with a video of me and my dog. I was called her name like a lunatic, and struggled the get the lead on her etc, may have shouted at her also. Embarrassing video for me to see of myself I’m sure!

fully expecting some tellings off for letting her off the lead etc which I can accept but please be kind. Thanks for reading x

I'm not sure where the law stands with filming strangers but I think it counts as harrassment.

It's perfectly legal to film people in a public place.

crew2022 · 28/12/2023 17:05

@ginasevern it's funny how no one on Mumsnet lets their puppy off the longline until they have perfect 100% recall and there are never any errors or distractions. But in the fields where I walk my dog I meet at least one dog a week who is completely ignoring their owner and wants to play or visit another field!
Obviously not Mumsnetters as owners but still surprised at the frequency.

SEG152 · 28/12/2023 17:06

It doesn’t matter that your dog is friendly. My dog walks on the lead and does not like to be approached by dogs off the lead. He’s an old guy now and having a bouncing puppy (no matter how friendly) in his face would make him snap.

That being said I feel for you being recorded. It’s a weird violating feeling.

Wolfiefan · 28/12/2023 17:07

Don’t forget a longline must go on a harness. Never a collar.
Perfect Recall is a fab book too.
Adolescent dogs can be arseholes. Secure fields and training classes can also help.

kitsuneghost · 28/12/2023 17:07

So she wouldn't recall, approached other dogs (thankfully just dogs). Then you struggled to get the lead back on.

Yeah sounds like you were in full control.

I think most of us have had issues with our dogs in public before, but it's how you deal with it that matters more than anything else.

I hate having dogs approach my on-lead dog but if the owner is clearly trying their best and are apologetic, I'll be much more understanding than if they're just ignoring their dog and letting them be a pest.

All dogs can have training "fails", after all.

bozzabollix · 28/12/2023 17:11

Don’t be too hard on yourself. In the real world people and dogs can make mistakes, but usually there’s nobody twatty enough to film it.

I’ve always had labs, I take it she’s a greedy wotsit, that’ll help, otherwise if mine have started to go off I run away from them, it works every single time, within seconds I’ve got them pursuing me and away from the thing they originally wanted to see. Might be worth a go? I let mine off from very young whilst they still are stuck to me like glue which I think establishes good recall.

BootsByTheBed · 28/12/2023 17:12

He is just another xl bully owner trying to prove that other dogs are as much of an issue as xl bullies. There’s a lot of angry twatty xl owners about at the moment trying to prove a point. Ignore him.

We crossed the road to avoid an owner with an xl a couple of months ago (we often avoid any large dog), he followed us filming, asking why we had crossed over and trying to tell us how well behaved his dog was. He was also trying to get us to put our dogs by his dog and going on and on. Total bullying dickhead.

Long line or private land is what you need for teaching/practising recall. One of our dogs have very poor recall, we’re working on it, but I never let any of them off lead in public places anyway.

krustykittens · 28/12/2023 17:17

Setyoufree · 28/12/2023 16:11

I also have a puppy of a similar age. Interesting what those above say about "perfect the recall on your garden/a field before letting them off" - that's the easy bit. It's in an environment with no other distraction. Nailed on. When there's another dog to play with, not so much. Friend's puppy on the other hand doesn't care about other dogs so would never approach another one. They haven't done more training, just a different dog.

Anyway, try to ignore the weird guy filming, he's taking his anger out on the wrong person.

Mine was exactly the same! Lovely dog at home, utter fucker in public. The only thing that solved the problem was neutering him and even now, at the grand old age of 11, he is still not 100 per cent trust worthy. That is terriers for you.

I would ignore this guy, OP. He is clearly very angry about the measures being taken over xl bullies, but frankly, recall is the least of their issues. Keep up your training and keep a long line on him so you always have him under control, for his own safety.

oakleaffy · 28/12/2023 17:17

Out of control Labradors are an absolute pain in the arse.
Lose the slip lead and just use a normal flat collar and clip on lead.

Catch and release lots of times on a walk and shouting is futile and stupid.
Praise, treat, release rinse and repeat so she likes being caught

if you shout and drag a lead over her head and go home- that’s no incentive to be caught.

IsEveryUserNameBloodyTaken · 28/12/2023 17:17

As others have said ignore him.
XL bully owners are behaving like “bullies” at the moment (appropriate).
Despite all the horrific incidents of mauling and deaths of humans and animals they ignore this and have been whining for England all over social media.

TerrysNeapolitan · 28/12/2023 17:18

Bloke seems a massive twat.

Thewolvesarerunningagain · 28/12/2023 17:18

SausageChopsBellyFlops · 28/12/2023 16:05

I have an 8 month old puppy too.

She is super friendly, but her recall is shocking, so she doesn't get offlead in the park, I hire a field out to practise with her, and will do so until her recall is damned near perfect.

You may not like him filming, but he does have a point. He also has an agenda at the moment with XL Bullies getting such a bad rep no matter how well trained they are, so it must be annoying to see other dogs not being well trained and bouncing everywhere.

i agree with this but one other thing to consider, XL bullies will now have to be muzzled which is likely to increase their anxiety if another dog is bouncing up to them. If the XLB reacts its curtains for them so be prepared for owners being very defensive (which will of course make the dog more anxious so round we go again). Anyway something to consider in choosing walk locations and off lead opportunities in the future

Thewolvesarerunningagain · 28/12/2023 17:20

Sorry, this last was a response to OP not @SausageChopsBellyFlops

kitsuneghost · 28/12/2023 17:20

@ginasevern
Re the comment dogs don't need to be aggressive to be dangerous.
If my gran was knocked over by a medium dog she would end up hospitalised. She is extremely frail and prone to fracture and given her medical health it could have an extremely bad outcome.

oakleaffy · 28/12/2023 17:24

Aquamarine1029 · 28/12/2023 16:20

Your dog IS completely out of control, and it's bloody annoying. You're running around screaming for your dog like a lunatic, your dog is totally ignoring you, and you think that's being in control or that it's acceptable because the dog is a "puppy?" It's because of dog owners like you that I will not be getting another dog, even though it breaks my heart. I just can't deal with irresponsible, entitled dog owners anymore. I can no longer deal with being accosted by unruly dogs whilst walking my own. It has gotten far, far worse in the last 10 years.

Definitely true.
I have a well behaved dog but out of control Labradors are HEAVY and “ Boisterous “ and generally out of control for some reason
Deffo not a fan
They are almostalways ginger coloured these days, too.
Xl bullies are worse but dog training has gone to pot in last few years.
Definitely far worse than 15 yrs ago

fromhellsheartistabatthee · 28/12/2023 17:25

Maybe this man is tired of encountering out of control dogs in public spaces and is making a compilation of ineffectual dog owners. If you can't control your Labrador, you might be better off with a smaller or more placid dog.

Baffledandalarmed · 28/12/2023 17:28

You're getting a pasting here, OP. And your dog was out of control and (tbh) if I had been walking my dogs and your dog had run up I'd have been livid (and have been in very similar circumstances).

BUT, this guy was only doing it because his nasty little XL bully is going to be banned soon and he's trying to justify how his dog is better trained than lots of other far less dangerous ones. Although your dog is never going to rip someones face off

Chalk it up to experience and learn from it. And try to forget about him videoing it.

And good luck! 8 month old lab's are a handful (bet she's beautiful though)

OrlandointheWilderness · 28/12/2023 17:30

Dog safe field to practice in. She might be friendly but that could well get her a vet visit if she bounced up to the wrong dog.

I know crew. They must live in a different world. What's all this about renting a private field to train your dog? I've never known anyone who does that or even heard of it before I came to Mumsnet.

Justleaveitblankthen · 28/12/2023 17:31

What an absolute wanker 😡
He wouldn't have said Boo to a Goose if you had a 6ft tall, 6ft wide bloke with you.

There are just weird people out there. Someone stopped to yell at me once because my dog was off lead and there was a sheep a speck in the distance. My dog was sitting next to my foot at the time, awaiting instructions. She was also almost fully blind and couldn't have seen the sheep to chase it, even if she chased sheep, which she didn't. My point is don't take it personally.

People have shared good advice and ideas about recall training on here though which you've acted on, so actually that guy inadvertently did you a favour 😆

You having your dog off lead in a sheep field (regardless of how much of a threat he/she isn't) legitimises other people doing it too. One rogue dog can ruin a flock. The only dog that should ever be off lead near sheep is a sheepdog being used to work with the sheep.

autienotnaughty · 28/12/2023 17:36

Hope you're feeling better op. I have a 3 year old lab and you have my sympathies. Adolescent labs can be hard work. Mine took a lot of training. We did puppy classes at 6m and then further training around a year as I was struggling. He's fine on recall now. I couldn't get on with a long lead as he was so strong (we also had issues with pulling) so I swapped to a gentle leader. And we did quiet fields /remote areas for training. I would go in a corner where I had full view and if I saw a dog in the distance I'd put lead on immediately.

Prelapsarianhag · 28/12/2023 17:37

He's a bullying twat. Ignore. I teach recall two ways. 1. Me and partner stand at different ends of the house/garden and call and treat. 2. I wait till the dog is busy in the house/garden and hide and recall, the small delay in finding me sets up a little anxiety about losing me. I also often hide behind a bush for a moment on walks and call, it keeps the dog sharp. Don't worry about the videoing cunt - he will look to be just what he is if he posts it anywhere. Can you imagine the male voice over criticising a woman trying to train a young dog. He will look like the fucking fool he is. Don't let this bully undermine your training.

EucalyptusPeppermint · 28/12/2023 17:37

ConstitutionHill · 28/12/2023 15:57

What can he possibly do with that video, really? Fuck all that's what. No one will care. Stop crying and don't give it another thought. Just keep the training up.

There’s a guy on TikTok who goes around filming any dog out of control that isn’t an XL Bully then posts the footage he’s taken.
