Does anyone else have a long haired dog that doesn't need washing?

My dog is a rescue probably a Mioritic shepherd cross. He is largely white with a long double coat and he hates water with a passion. He never swims and I have never managed to bath him.

Today he got really muddy up his legs and belly on a walk. I waited for him to get dry then brushed all the mud off and honestly he looks as good as before. Not show standard clearly but not obviously muddy. Sometimes I spray some dry shampoo stuff on him but that's as far as I'll go.

I see people on here complaining a lot about hosing off muddy dogs and getting Equafleece coats and I just wonder am I doing this wrong? Is there any problem with just brushing the mud out?

Pic is after brushing

My Golden retriever loves mud and water but only outside water…..not bath. He gets a bath very occasionally but the rest of the time we towel dry the excess mud, let it dry and brush. He always looks clean and doesn’t smell

I'm glad someone else thinks it is possible. I was beginning to think I am a neglectful dog owner.

Aww. Looks happy. Do they emerge all clean and dry? In that case I shall have to get one

I thought I needed to bath my GR each time she got muddy. It was from mumsnet that I realised you just needed to towel them down then give them a good brush once they are dry.
Mine does get a shower every now and again - but she just looks so glum I'm happy with the brushing.

Oh look at him, what a superstar!

TokyoSushi · 24/12/2023 16:52

And yes the brushing is usually fine!

Gorgeous dog!

I have a short-haired breed so I hose him off and then towel him down because it's quicker, but if I'm out or in a rush then a towelling off works just as well.

I leave on for about 20 mins then brush him but he goes groomers every 8 week

I have a collie retriever cross, never needs a bath. She just dries off and the mud slides off. Beautiful shiny coat again within a couple of hours.

I do brush her every few days, but that is really to help get less shedding and try and avoid mats behind the ears & back legs, not for mud.

We used to have two Shetland Sheepdogs who also had double coats.
Wed bath them if they got super muddy or had toileting issues - but usually only their legs/tummy as they too hated water, wouldn't go swimming etc, only ever paddled up to their ankles.
They hated the bath - proper hangdog expressions but they dried super quick & loved shaking all over the house!
I guess a lot depends on if you have space/a place where they can dry the mud off before brushing it off. If not, a quick leg wash is fine.

Ddog says thanks for the compliments (he agrees he is a very handsome boy).
Glad to see he is not the only shower refusenik we have hard floors in the kitchen and he is confined there after walks until he dries out much to his disgust as he believes he has a divine right to his favourite spot on the sofa
I think I will buy him a drying robe for the New Year. ( Much more dignified than wandering round with a towel on your back)

I have a very long haired, giant breed and the best thing I ever did was get a plumber to install a warm tap outside (about £80). I also had a handyman make me a "shower table" with hooks for my hosepipe. Added a shower/shampoo dispenser attachment and bobs your uncle, we have a clean dog nearly every day. Saying all that, mine is not terrified of the hosepipe. Not keen, but not terrified. I also use baby shampoo. Your dog is absolutely beautiful and definitely looks like he has some Meteoric DNA in there!

Rough collie so heavily coated. We do stick her in the bath if her feet are really bad and she goes to the groomers for a wash and deshed. Most of the time the mud dries and falls off.
