Harness for Large Greyhound

TootenCarMoon · 24/12/2023 11:03

Hoping to rehome an ex-(non)racer (bred for racing, not interested) just after Christmas.
He’s large, approx 40kg and young. Walks well on collar but I prefer a harness.
Does anyone have any recommendations?
Current dogs have Ezydog ones and Hurtta but as the greyhound’s chest is so deep, I think he’ll need something different.
Perfect Fit is my top contender but open to suggestions!

Or for a very strong dog -

We have a Ruffwear Webmaster - there is no way a dog could back out of this. We had it for our old reactive greyhound - it’s great and dependable but a little overkill for our current lazy plodder.

I know a greyhound that walks in a Hurtta Weekend Warrior and it fits him beautifully.

Beat of luck with your adoption. Greyhounds are the best ❤

Drydogs harnesses are really well made and impossible to wriggle out of.

These coats are fantastic

Oh wow @ChateauDuMont They look great. He’ll definitely need a coat.

I second DryDogs as with the extra strap they cannot back out of it. I have an incredibly strong dog, although he isn’t that big (10kg lighter than my previous Grey) and I walk him with a double lead with one end on the harness and one on a traditional fish tail collar.
If you don’t think he is an escapologist then CosyDogs are worth a look.

We used this company for our pointer girl. Made to measure

I really like Perfect Fit for
Pointies as you can personalise the fit so well, and if their shape changes due to getting more muscle you can alter just that part

A fish tail collar fitted correctly is the safest option for a greyhound. The rescue will provide it along with the dog.

Absolutely. And train your dog.

I've had a million adverts for a dog company called Aurora Paws today, a quick look showed they had loads of harnesses.

Purplecatshopaholic · 24/12/2023 18:10

My podencos (similar shape to greyhounds) all have Ruffwear Webmasters. Awesome harnesses. Fit great, Houdini proof, really adjustable.

margotrose · 25/12/2023 08:18

We have hundreds of sighthounds around here and interestingly I've never, ever seen one wearing a harness.

TootenCarMoon · 25/12/2023 13:36

@Greycottage He’s coming direct from the kennels, was due to go to rehoming centre but won’t need to now.

He walks nicely and isn’t keen like others I’ve walked who were ex-racers so hopefully not likely to lunge but you never know.

There’s a few whippets/lurchers round here, they all seem to have harnesses but they are quite small and petite.

@TootenCarMoon Ah okay, ours came from kennels too. They should still provide leather fishtail collar and lead, a muzzle and some food to get you started. You should keep things the same to begin with, and the fishtail collar and lead is safest with greyhounds. Best advice is to listen to what the kennels tell you. There’s also a retired greyhound owners UK facebook which is useful.

Ah thank you, I’ll look that group up!

This isn’t the first one I’ve rehomed but the last was when I still lived at home and seemed super easy to integrate and care for but maybe I’m remembering the good parts!
