Help please with dog marking inside

Ddog is an 11 month old Labrador - he has been fully toilet trained for ages but this morning he cocked his leg and marked inside the house.

He had already been outside for his first wee of the day so it was definitely marking rather than desperation and he stopped as soon as I yelled at him told him to stop.

I will use urine destroyer to remove all traces, but has anyone got experience of this and how do I stop him from doing it again - it is not a habit I want him to have?!

Get him done..Nothing worse than a male dog wee smell

Jackwiththelazyeye · 24/12/2023 09:09

The vet has said he won't castrate until he is 18 months old so I need to manage this for another 7 months 🤦‍♀️

What did he mark on?

Mrsjayy · 24/12/2023 09:24

i would make a noise if you see him do it again to interupt him, sometimes they just forget themselves.

Dbank · 24/12/2023 09:34

I agree, trying to catch him doing it and make a very loud "NO!", failing that if he does it in the same place, move his food there for a couple of days. Dogs don't wee where they eat.

If you have a huge problem feed him in multiple places.

Hope it works for you, it usually does.

@IngGenius it was a beanbag (large one) luckily waterproof, a little bit went on the carpet as well

Thanks all - I did make a very loud noise and pulled straight out of the room and put him outside in the garden. He had no interest in peeing again once outside.

I will continue to do that if it continues (praying that it doesn't!)

its just a phase try and not make too big a fuss and personally i would just direct him away and not touch him incase he gets caught in a loop of negative attention.

Marking isn't necessarily something that's down to hormones - dogs can also mark because they're stressed, anxious or unwell.

I really wouldn't go down the road of yelling at him or making a loud noise - because if he's marking out of insecurity or fear, you're only going to make the behaviour worse.

The fact that it happened for the first time on Christmas Eve says to me that he could be a bit unsettled. Have a think - is your routine all out of whack? Is the house noisier than normal with lots of new sounds, smells and people? If so, he could be feeling a bit unsure or confused and marking because of that.

Mrsjayy · 24/12/2023 20:49

i just wanted to.say i meant to make a noise to.distract him not frighten him.

Phillipa12 · 24/12/2023 21:06

My male lab did the same at this age. I got him some belly bands off Amazon, they are basically male nappies for dogs. Yes he looked like a dick but they worked a treat.

JustOneMoreBaileys · 24/12/2023 21:26

This was just a one off?

I wouldn't worry. I think mine didn't 3-4 times about that age. He's now 6 and has never done it since.

Not linked to neutering which didn't happen y til he was over 3 yrs old.

JustOneMoreBaileys · 24/12/2023 21:26

Mine did it 3-4 times.

(Not didn't)
