It’s DD’s birthday - some cakes weee left unattended and we think she ate one small homemade fairy cake and max two of these: https://www.sainsburys.co.uk/gol-ui/product/sainsburys-4-triple-chocolate-muffins-276g

she seems fine but she only weighs 5.5kg. Might they make her very ill?

i don’t think the actual chocolate content is high.

I wouldn’t.

Ohdearwhatnow4 · 21/12/2023 21:12

How long ago?

Favouritefruits · 21/12/2023 21:12

I’d see how she goes, how much actual chocolate is in the cakes? (sorry I won’t click on the link) if she starts vomiting or looking lousy I’d take her to the vet, the vet will induce vomiting and is very unpleasant so I’d only go that route if absolutely necessary. It’s dark chocolate that’s the worst I’m not sure how much is in each cake. Sorry not to be more helpful

StarDolphins · 21/12/2023 21:22

My Shih Tzu ate 8 chocolate coins 1 Christmas & was fine. I think it’s either plain choc or high choc content that’s the problem & I’ve read the other ingredients of these & seems hardly any chocolate in these.

whatsinanumber · 21/12/2023 21:22

Thanks so much for answering. Probably two hours ago. She seems fine so far, just a bit more hyper than usual and quite thirsty. No dark chocolate

There’s an online calculator which says for a dog weighing 5 kg if they consume more than 90 g of dark chocolate and 200 g of milk chocolate then it’s very dangerous, I doubt there’s anywhere near that amount in the muffins, so unless your dog is a puppy, I would just closely watch and see, probably going to be a bit manic with the amount of sugar and I expect dog will have diarrhoea.

JustCheckingUp · 21/12/2023 21:25

expect foul farts…. My King Charles did this last year. He was fine!

crumblingschools · 21/12/2023 21:28

We were recommended to induce vomiting in our cavalier after snaffling chocolate muffin, but he is elderly and has a heart condition. He was fine after that

CombatBarbie · 21/12/2023 21:28

Both my previous and current dogs have stolen/eaten giant bars of chocolate, advent calendars, Xmas chocolates..... Gave them the shits but they didn't learn from that. My current dog seems to have a stomach of steel..... Current fascination is whole (yes whole) packs of butter or tubs of marg 🤔🤮

Newuser75 · 21/12/2023 21:28

I'd be surprised if there were any issues. If she starts vomiting then call the vet but otherwise I'd just watch her. It's the really dark chocolate you need to look out for.

StBrides · 21/12/2023 21:30

It depends on the amount and type of chocolate vs the weight of the dog. I would call your vets and ask their opinion.

whatsinanumber · 21/12/2023 21:32

wow, first time I’ve posted in this area and you are all so lovely to have taken the time to respond. I will keep a close eye for now…

That was really lucky with the mince pies! Some dogs can die after 1 or 2 raisins while others seem to be unaffected by them, but unlike chocolate, there is no calculator or safe amount and no way of knowing if your dog is susceptible or not. I find grapes/ raisins very scary for that reason!

ActDottie · 21/12/2023 22:04

Given she’s so small I’d take her to the vets. I couldn’t forgive myself if something happened.

autienotnaughty · 21/12/2023 22:37

I had a large basset eat 3/4 of a chocolate cake. He was fine.

A lab pup eat 2.5kg of chocolate. He vomited everywhere and lay in a corner of the garden shaking. Obviously we got out of hours vet. Gave him charcoal said it was good he had thrown up straight away and to give plenty of water. Charged £270!!

Nn9011 · 21/12/2023 22:41

She's quite light for the amount she might have eaten. Does your pet insurance have a vet helpline? Or does your vet do an out of hours line? It effects their liver so I'd be looking to get advice from a professional on this one.
My lab is obsessed with eating socks so I really feel for you x

StBrides · 21/12/2023 22:53

Call the vets for advice, my best friend is a vet nurse and wouldn't take a risk with this. Vets may well just give them something to make them sick

margotrose · 21/12/2023 23:33

I would ring the vet. She's only 5.5kg so you want to be on the safe side.

crumblingschools · 22/12/2023 10:41

@whatsinanumber how is your dog this morning?

MeditatationMum · 22/12/2023 19:16

Hope you had a good stock of poo bags!

whatsinanumber · 26/12/2023 23:48

Sorry it's taken me a few days to check back in! We went straight from bday party into a whirlwind of family / xmas events and I took on board the advice given on the day and then forgot to check back.

Dog is totally fine. She went a bit nuts that evening, just more hyper than normal but nothing more than that. Slightly upset stomach the day after and then totally fine.

Thank you again to everyone who took the time to post - it's much appreciated.
