Toilet training in Winter/ Dog has kennel cough

Hello I would be very grateful for any advise.

My dog 9 months female a rescue not toilet trained.I have a second dog male 4 years toilet trained., goes outside does not pee in the house.

My new rescue has kennel cough, and it's cold here she has a coat on but I don't want to make her do too much exercise .
She seems to walk a bit or go out to the trees outside, but then want to pee inside the house, when back.

I thought she had peed one time, came back and she did it here.My eye sighr not being so grate and it being dark.
Any tips?

I will be away 5 hours during the day, when back at work in 3 weeks time.I have some back up, a daughter 17 who is here quite a bit still at school but 5mins away.My husband who can sometimes take both dogs to work.( Not the one who isn't toilet trained at the moment as it's an office, however later, both could go some days a week.
I have a dog walker who will walk only my two.

I am worried though, as my son trained the last dog.
Please any tips would be most welcome thank you.

You need to go out with her and put her on a lead when she goes to the toilet, that way you can capture the behaviour and praise her massively for getting it right.

Everytime she goes to the toilet properly, use a cue work (we say "go toilet") then loads of praise when she's finished. Eventually you should be able to open the door and say "go toilet" and she'll know what to do.

Thank you very much for your reply, yes I am goinng out with a lead. How often is good 30 minutes?
She has a cough, so don't want to walk her much.I will take her to some trees over the road.

Shpuld I incöude my other dog as well male 4 years?

Personally I would focus on just training her alone in case the other dog is a distraction.

If she's nine months you may be able to get away with taking her every hour but I'd start at thirty minutes and go from there.

Good luck!

Thank you.I ended up walking though fir quite a while with her before she wull go outside.I am just concerned as it is cold and wet.
She has a dog coat, though.Yes it seems better to do it without other dog.
Anyway again thanks for tips.I need to go to same spot regularly?

Do you not have a garden where you can take her on a lead ? Introduce a cue word so that she will hopefully go quicker once she gets it . Unfortunately if she’s going to be home alone for long periods then it’s going to take a lot longer to crack it .

If the lead doesn't work, then the next step is if she hasn't weed for a couple of hours, stick her in her crate and then take her out every 30 mins until she has weed; if she doesn't back in the crate as she's unlikely to wee there.

Shutting a dog in a cage isn’t house training it , it just means it may not pee in a cage but as soon as you start letting her wander she will still pee indoors because you’ve not trained her not to .

That's not house training, it's just shutting the dog away to avoid having to clean up accidents.

Hello, yes I do have a garden. So I go out to garden every 1hr to30 minites for 5 mins and explain to the dog pee, wee? Do I show a treat? I realise I can look this up on the internet, as well.

Do we just hangaround in back garden for 5mins at a specific spot?
Thank you very much

How long does it take if you do this method every gour to 30minutes can I get it done by 6th January? Thanks again,I know I am a bit green, with the training.
This pup 9 months, other dog trained by my son, and has been in a shelter where it could pee and poo all over.

Thank you

Just to say this dog seems to have bladder, bowel control overnight. So it went from 11pm to 5am without doing wee or poo then I took it out.Is this because it's9 months?Again thank you for all your replies.

I would rarher bot shut it in a crate , and I actually don't have one.Hoping to ger it mostly trained.O otherwise just persitance, I suppose.

Is it okay if it seems to sleep night over waiting till morning and not going to garden?

Whether you'll get it done by the sixth or not really depends on the dog. Some dogs catch on really quickly, with others it takes a lot longer. You just have to be persistent and stick with it - they get it eventually.

I would take her out into the garden every half an hour when she's awake, as well as after naps, meals, play, walks and training. If she goes, add the command while she's going then praise like mad.

Using treats isn't necessarily the best way to toilet train because they sometimes get clever and will pee a bit to get the treat, then finish inside rather than in the garden.
