Butternut box left out of the fridge for two days. Bin?

That’s it. First Butternut box we have ever ordered. Stupidly, I assumed that as many vacuum packed food, it didn’t need the fridge.

Box arrived on Tuesday afternoon, it is Thursday evening now. The packs are still very cold and have condensation around them (as when you take a cold bottle out of the fridge) as they came covered in some insulation and have been kept cold by it, I suppose.

Do they normally come frozen? If not, should I bin them?

Yes they do come frozen. I always keep 5 in the fridge and then keep topping up every 5 days. Rest in the freezer. I wouldn't risk it, bin them

Bordesleyhills · 14/12/2023 20:46

If cold still I’d say fine

sprigatito · 14/12/2023 20:47

What's actually in there? Hard to say without knowing.

CrikeyMajikey · 14/12/2023 20:48

I’d happily re-freeze a few and let them eat them.

hedgehoglurker · 14/12/2023 20:51

I'd bin them. They should be frozen until defrosted for use.

MeMySonAnd1 · 15/12/2023 10:42

Thank you all, I was thinking that possibly the vegetable ones could be saved.

The others are beef, venison and something else (no chicken, turkey or duck). So I will bin those.

No don’t! It’s fine

MeMySonAnd1 · 15/12/2023 10:44

… or should I bin them all?

Not Re freezing thawed food is about quality not safety. If it’s cold, it’s fine to refreeze.

Also- dogs. They eat crap. They will cope with food that’s a day or two past its best!

When your freezer defrosts, everything cold is safe to refreeze except ice cream. Meat probably needs to be cooked before refreezing for people, but that’s a quality thing too.

Userxyd · 15/12/2023 10:48

I'd be dubious about the meat. If you've got strong stomachs then fine but I wouldn't risk it for the kids

backinthebox · 15/12/2023 10:57

It’s dog food yes? I’m not a dog owner, but when my mum and sister come to stay, their dogs have eaten:

  • horse shit (lots!)
  • the remains of the Robin the cats killed and left under the feed bins for a week
  • half a dead deer
  • a pile of eggs they found under a bush, who knows how long they were there
  • grass
  • chicken food
  • cat food
  • a mouse they caught themselves
  • all the kids sweets
  • a whole cream cake
  • last bits of the Sunday roast that sat on the counter for 2 days

None of this is intentional (except the Sunday roast leftovers) they are sometimes naughty dogs who find and eat something they shouldn’t, but they don’t seem to suffer.

Gourmet frozen dog food which defrosted and then was refrozen would I imagine be well within the capabilities of the average dog digestive system to deal with!

EdithStourton · 15/12/2023 11:40

If it's cold your dog will be fine. Dogs will bury bones dig them a day or two later and have another go. They have incredible digestive systems.

Thank you, I think they will be ok, she had a vegetable one today and is fine.

I put all the meat based one in the freezer yesterday and the veggies in the fridge while I was deciding what to do with them. This morning the ones that spent the night in the fridge appeared to be warmer than when I put them in so I guess they are ok.

Thank you for reassuring me that I didn’t spend all that money in vain 🙂

I'm sure they'll be fine. They come packed really well and stay frozen or at least very cold for a good while. I would put the coldest most frozen in the freezer and the most defrosted in the fridge.

Hayliebells · 16/12/2023 17:37

I use Butternut Box and I regularly leave it out of the fridge for ages and ages, hours longer than you "should" my dog has always been absolutely fine. I'd absolutely just freeze the stuff that's defrosted, it's for a dog after all. Dogs must surely have the strongest of stomachs, given all the rubbish they eat.
