Our girl almost eight months has been restless and whining. The penny finally dropped when I saw her licking. It's her first season. It's over 20 years since we had a bitch so I'm a bit rusty.

How do I treat her, she's still such a baby herself?

You don’t need to treat her any differently really. She may go off her food a bit so you could give her things she really likes. She may get a bit more clingy. Of course keep her away from any amorous chancers 😁. It’s as well to keep her inside really as their immune system goes down a bit, it’s so any puppies can implant in the womb. The season lasts roughly three weeks, days 9 to about 14 tend to be the time when a mating would “ take” though they all differ. The red, slightly bloody looking discharge becomes clear & her vulva will swell when she reaches the fertile time. She’ll be back to normal once the swelling subsides & the discharge stops.

Our lab was 8.5 months when she had her first season and behaviour wise she was no different at all. We did lots of training as we weren't able to give her much off lead exercise.

She's settled down now. Just curses that Christmas will be full of grandchildren who leave doors open and she might escape 🙈
