How difficult is it to rest your dog after cruciate repair?

Dog will be having TPLO procedure on 21st December. She's really active and is allowed on furniture and our bed. She's never been crated 😬 this is going to be hell isn't it? To top it all off the shitty insurance only covers £2000 of a £4000+ bill.

Argh.

Just reactivated my account to reply to this
Our very lively spaniel had this operation when 18 months

First few nights I made a giant pen around a mattress on the floor and slept with her. Then as we have brass bedsteads I made a giant pen around the bed and slept with her

I bought similar to these and unclipped to make a more flexible frame. The ones I got were taller and cheaper

Initially I put a single mattress against the wall and penned the other 2 sides. She slept with me on the mattress.

Dogwithagammyleg · 11/12/2023 20:37

Moved it to the sofa in the evening. Put it across the front so they could sit on the sofa but not jump down.
Basically I spent 10 days in a pen with the dog!

katmarie · 11/12/2023 20:42

Our rhodesian ridgeback had this done a couple of weeks ago. She's the laziest dog on the planet though so it's not been too bad. She's also large enough to get up and down from the sofa on one leg with no difficulty. But we did confine her to my office for a while, which had nothing she could climb on, and meant I could manage her all day while she had the cone on her head. We also took her outside to go to the loo on a lead, so she couldn't try and go up and down steps etc. She's healed phenomenally quickly though, after a couple of weeks she's doing brilliantly, and the scar has closed up really well.

Our vet gave us physio exercises to do with her after a few weeks so we'll be starting those over Xmas I think.

Thanks @Dogwithagammyleg that's helpful. The pen you linked to is a reasonable price too and along the lines of what I've been thinking of. I have a crate from her being a puppy but she hated it and I think it's too small now anyway. The pen in front of the sofa is particularly ingenious! We have had to sleep on the floor with her on a mattress when she had a mast cell tumour removed (from the same bloody leg as it happens!) And it wasn't fun but doable.

It's the weeks of recovery afterwards I'm also dreading as she normally goes out with a dogwalker 3 times a week as I work.

Glad your dog is doing so well @katmarie and after only 2 weeks! Vet suggested at least an 8 week healing period with no off-lead, no jumping or using stairs at all. Is this similar to what your vet told you?

Yes, very much the same, 8 weeks no exercise, then very short on lead walks only to build up strength along with physio exercises and possibly some water based physio as well. By 3 months they anticipate she should be almost where she was before the injury.

OwlBeGone · 11/12/2023 21:45

Well, at least I will miss out a fair amount of the dreaded muddy winter walks. Not sure the dog will be in agreement about that.
