Advice for 10 week old lab puppy

So we've had sweet lily for just a week , crate training her , she has a upset tummy so we rang the vets and they said to change her food to a better one ( breeder sent her home with a bag but it's quite low brand ) so we've got the hills puppy food for her, her poo is still runny but I guess she needs adjusting to it. She's really good at letting us know when she needs the loo, she will wait by the patio doors.
Routine is feed, out for a wee/poo, play then back in the crate , and so on. At night she's taken out for a toilet and then put in her crate , my son is sleeping downstairs with her ( she's his dog ,he is in his 20's) at the moment and is getting up with her during the night and she's happy to go back to get Crate to go back to sleep, she may grumble a bit but eventually settles.
The issue is with her bad belly when she's in her crate it's hard to tell if she needs the loo or if she just wants to come out , she's had a few accidents in the crate during the night, I'm looking for advice how other owners have crate trained their puppies, and how long should someone sleep downstairs with her ? It's my turn tonight to sleep downstairs to give my son a break ( he's like a single dad at the moment haha ) and I'm a bit anxious to be honest. She's such a good girl x obligatory photo enclosed....

Our lab is a human dustbin watch out she's not eating poo, rubbish or plants.

Ours was sent home with pedigree chum we switched to Ava which is grain free it was fine stomach wise but he went off it at around a year. So I moved to Millie's wolf heart. Had no issues since. He's nearly 3.

We've had her for one week today , breeder said she had loose poo but said it was because of the food from transition from mum - he'd taken her to the vet at well

Something isn't right then. As explained by Lougle. Chicken & rice might be the better option until the tummyis settled. What food brand sid breeder give?
What else did the vet suggest. Has the puppy been wormed? Has first inoculation?

lardass88 · 03/12/2023 11:46

Yea she's up to date with jabs and worm and flea treatment. She was on Purina beta puppy.
Moving forward I'm going to give her rice, fish and chicken to settle her tummy, pop her to the vets and go from there gradually introducing a better food for her.

Don't give her rice and chicken for longer than a week, they need a lot of nutrients at this age. Slowly introduce the new food, we did it over 10 days, spread so that at first he got 1/4 new, 3/4 old, then 50/50, then more of the new one until he adjusted.
Our puppy (now almost six months old and slowly turning into a jerk :)) had an upset stomach for the first few weeks, too. The vet said that it's normal: new water, new environment, the stress of moving and adjusting all at once can cause that.
Don't lock the crate if you think that your puppy could have an accident inside, she will refuse to sleep inside it if it happens too often because the smell will linger. We left the crate open and put a clothes horse on the floor in front, this way we always woke up if our puppy was awake and needed to go.

We're in the throes of a 9 month old male labrador's twatty teenage behaviour. Thank you for reminding me he was cute once! 🙂

Ha! I feel your pain! Our male retriever is 10 months and has suddenly developed selective hearing and zero recall! I have to remind myself it will pass and he is adorable in loads of other ways 😍

You need to get Pro Kolin it's available on Amazon or from pet shops. IMO it's a must have when you have a puppy, I always had a tube in because it's really easy for them to get upset stomaches.

It's a pro biotic/prebiotic that helps soothe tummy's and firms up poo. The dose is based on pups weight and you give it twice a day so make sure to get a big enough tube. Always sorted my pups out within 24-48hrs.

Thank you I will try this

I don’t know if this is relevant, but I recently adopted a young dog and she had runny poos for 2-3 weeks after coming here, although she was eating the same food. It was stress, nothing to do with diet. Once she felt more settled, she was fine. Having seen my other dogs scoff down the most repulsive things in the countryside (sheep poo, deer intestines) with no ill effects, I’m a tad cynical about their supposedly delicate digestive system.

miniegg3 · 03/12/2023 22:39

To be fair, all of my labs have had squishy really smelly poos until they've been put on grain free food

Itsuitsyou · 03/12/2023 22:53

@lardass88 apologies if already mentioned as I haven't read the full thread, when I first brought my boy home at 8 weeks, he had a really upset tummy. His poo was "pudding" like, very sloppy. He, too, was sent home with some poor quality food from the breeder who insisted it was because he was probably a bit unsettled. I even took him to the breeders vet who said he was just a bit dehydrated and put him on a drip. When he still didn't improve I took him to another vet who tested his poo and it came back positive for Giardia. It was easily treatable but could have been very serious if just left. Please get your pup checked for Giardia if there is no improvement, they can go downhill very quickly.

My lab had runny poos. We put her on Nutriment raw. We started with the Nutriment tripe and the gradually mixed in the other proteins. Her poos quickly became small firm and less smelly. Though the tripe stinks before it comes out the other end. 😂

muddyford · 04/12/2023 08:41

I had the same issue with my Lab, now two. He turned out to be sensitive to chicken so is on a salmon and rice food now and I add a couple of Yumove probiotics to his supper.

hellsbells99 · 04/12/2023 08:52

Make sure you have your insurance all sorted.
As pp posters have said, try the Pro Kalin paste and also fish food.
if still loose, get some poo sample bottles and ask vet to test for giardia.

TheSecretaryBird · 04/12/2023 12:38

Have you looked at the dog first website / Dr Conor Brady at all?

His website offers a lot of research based information on canine nutrition.

I personally wouldn’t feed rice / too much rice as dogs don’t need carbs and especially refined carbs

Betteroutdoors · 04/12/2023 17:11

If you can't get hold of pumpkin then a tablespoon of boiled mashed sweet potato or butternut squash can also help. It might also be that she is getting slightly too much food, that sometimes just gets expelled as loose poo rather than full on liquid.

My lab cross is just coming up to 14 months, so we're basically exactly a year older :)

ImJustHereLandOfLabs · 21/01/2024 00:24

When my puppy was in it quietly I gave her some treats. I also let her whine not matter how long it was quite quickly she picked up she’s not getting out if she’s whining/barking. Slept with her for the first 3 weeks then started to sleep in my own bed.
