New puppies - kit recommendations

Swordfishtrombone · 29/11/2023 19:30

Hello, I'm looking for product recommendations as we're about to adopt two puppies (sisters) once they've been vaccinated. They are Lab-Cocker crosses who will be crate trained. We have puppy training in place.

I'm thinking about teething toys, harnesses and car travel kit that you've found useful. Or other things you might recommend. It's been a long time since we've had very young dogs.

Not a good idea to adopt litter mates.

The breeder should have informed you about that.

MimsyBorogroves · 29/11/2023 19:34

Just one puppy. Honestly.

Crate, vetbed, bowls. Kings, lickimats. Food that the breeder has used at first. Spare blankets. Nice chewy things. Toys. Long line. More poo bags than you'd ever think.

Wolfiefan · 29/11/2023 19:35

One puppy is plenty. Have a look at FB group dog training advice and support for info.

Swordfishtrombone · 29/11/2023 20:04

Thanks so much for your concern. Yes, I am aware of the issues and will be training them separately. I did actually read up on this before adopting both and don't feel I have to explain either myself or our specific circumstances to strangers on the Internet

But as this is not the subject of the thread, feel free to be helpful somewhere else.

Wine and more wine
Pee cleaner
Plasters
Plenty of space for photos

Prepare to fall in love hard and fast!

Did you read my post? I have training support a plenty thanks.

Didn't go to a breeder. That's the problem with making assumptions, isn't it? 🙄

If you'd read my post properly you might have noticed I'm not new to dogs and was asking about specific products for new pups not general guidance. Honestly.

Perhaps read OPs post about adopting not buying before judging them?

Lots of patience and consistency with training from everyone involved, good luck!

Itisyourturntowashthebath · 29/11/2023 20:11

I'd assume that if you have the ability to train litter mates, knowing what kit to buy is a doddle.

Wanttobeok · 29/11/2023 20:11

Vet bed for the crates
Bowls
Harness and leads
Pee cleaner
A shit load of kitchen roll
Lots of training treats
Treat bag to attach to your belt/coat
Clicker depending on whether you are training that way or not.

(...and stop being so defensive! Not surprising that the first couple of comments were about littermate issues maybe you should have addressed that in your OP)

Ha! Well yes, indeed! I can do all that!

It's been a long time since we've had very young dogs.

This is why people have covered the basics, myself included. Wish I'd not bothered actually given your tone and responses.

I'm sorry you feel that way. I didn't ask for a basics list, I'm sorry if you read it that way and sorry if my tone is defensive but honestly I didn't come here to be judged actually just looking for tips on brands. The comments, assumptions and generally goadiness have been quite something else. I asked about specific products that other people have found particularly good as I'll be investing in new stuff. Sorry that wasn't articulated clearly enough to you (or frankly, for some of the other delightful firebrands who feel I deserve a lecture here)

Thanks for the general checklist, anyway. I'm sure someone new to dog ownership will find it particularly useful when they search this forum.

You know, when my first dog died I found real comfort here in this forum. I'll not use it again.

I agree with PP. If you knew enough to take on littermates then you would know enough to know what to buy. Should you decide you’d actually like some advice that FB group is brilliant.

ouchyoubiteybugger · 29/11/2023 20:40

I think as someone who recommends adopt don't shop and who obviously ( now!) Has a lot of dog knowledge you would be pleased that there are so many people on here who understand and are preaching the litter-mate issue. However that aside, I recommend wetting teatowels and squeezing them before rolling them knotting and freezing them. The best least messy teething chews I ever used. Also recommend lucky mats just before bedtime and naps as it settles them. My only other advice would be avoid puppy pads and start as you mean to go on, don't allow upstairs/sofas unless you want to carry that on. And train from day one the command 'stop' and settle. Good luck

needtonamechangeforthis1 · 29/11/2023 20:41

Personally I'd get them each a well fitting Y front harness and use that over a collar. I'd also use bungee leads so that they are less likely to get a jolt when they inevitably get over excited and run to the end of the lead.

For traveling I would use individual crates. I'm uncomfortable strapping dogs in to the seatbelt but even more so with young puppies. It will keep you safe in a crash but I'm not so convinced about the puppies!

Chew toys I would buy things like kongs and good quality toys that are less likely to be completely pulled apart and potentially consumed.
I would use things like licki mats and snufflemats to get them working their noses a bit.

I would also suggest having stairgates so you can shut them apart if needed.

Good luck!

Get kennel cleaner! Go for the 5l & spray bottle. It's magic stuff and cheaper than your average pet store urine cleaner.

Vetbed for the crate and use bio washing powder or kennel cleaner to wash at 60°C as that kills flea and worm eggs.

IngGenius · 29/11/2023 20:52

Vet Bed
Perfect Fit Harnesses
Pet plan Insurance taken out 2 weeks before the dogs arrive.

Adjustable collars to last longer

Personally I only need a water bowl not a food bowl as all initial food is used for training.

Tombolobeaches · 29/11/2023 21:46

Hi Op. I find the Halti brand collars great - really strong but look comfortable and good too. I’ve bought bigger sizes as my pup has grown. You can get from Amazon.

No brand suggestion but house lines are brilliant and didn’t seem to be a thing years ago when I first got a pup.

As others have said, vet bed.

I’m not familiar with spaniels, but I would have in whatever suitable grooming tools to get them used to it early.

Not so much for very young pups, I love Rock It Dog products, their biothane leads and lines are great as they don’t absorb water and mud, nor risk nylon burns on your hands! Not cheap but well made and all I use now.

For toys etc I find a bit hit and miss but Kong do toys and I found what I bought to be durable. My pup has some long lasting soft toys too but I don’t know the brands, I think I got a selection from pets at home.

Hope all goes well!

stayathomer · 29/11/2023 21:55

I don’t know about lab cocker crosses but cockers are the bittiest dogs EVER! So lots and lots of chew toys and teddies that you can hand off to them as soon as they open their mouths. Our dog is now great for running for his toys when he feels the need to grab something! Easy peasy puppy Squeezy is the best dog book ever written and if you’re going to have two dogs, I can’t recommend the ‘watch me’ command enough! Enjoy op and best of luck

Wanttobeok · 29/11/2023 22:13

We are the goady ones? OK

Enjoy your puppies
