How to help elderly dog after another dog passes

We sadly lost our Westie at the weekend at the age of 15. He was great up until the last six months and started having bouts of breathing issues caused by mass on his lungs. We don’t believe in keeping any animal alive longer than is right and it was his time. He was such a scamp and so lovely with the kids.

We’d had him with his litter brother since they were eight weeks old and they shared beds up until the end. His brother is now lost. He’s had a few accidents in the house, is pacing and his tail is firmly low and down.

We do have another dog in the house who joined us 3 months ago so he’s not on his own but is there anything we can do or should be doing? Possibly not, seems crazy to ask. We have had our boy cremated so we can’t ‘show’ him his brother. I didn’t know that was a ‘thing’ until after otherwise we could have done it. Too late now.

He’s grieving. There’s not really a lot you can do for now, like with people it just needs time. Meanwhile just give him lots of extra fuss, cuddles & his favourite things like treats. You could also try giving him a hot water bottle in bed. He’s been used to the comfort of another warm little body to snuggle with & the nights are cold.
Really sorry, it’s a tough sad time for both of you.
