Young dog suddenly drinking copious amounts of water and excessive weeing, very worried!

Dear Mumsnetters, having found excellent doggie advice on here I thought I would ask this.
2 year, 8 month old tiny Jack Russell suddenly drinking massive amounts of water, this from a dog that doesn't usually drink much in even last years extreme heat. Also he has had two accidents in the house which he has never done since a puppy.
I have recently changed his food to Eden Holistic pet food (dry) before he was on Lilly's kitchen plus a little chicken, he still has the chicken with the Eden. The house is warmer because we have the heating on all the time now but only to 20c, he does drape himself around any heat source plus recently the humidity has dropped in the house due to other factors often below 50 RH.
He has allergies for which he receives a monthly injection.
Tomorrow he anyway has an appointment at vet for the injection and I will mention this. He is an absolute darling, loves everyone, amazing with other dogs, children and strangers, I absolutely adore him and am home full time with him, please have any of you experienced similar? I am worried sick!

Here he is, he is only 5kg, so easily affected by any illness as there is not much of him bless!

What a cutie, I would wonder if he had diabetes, call the vet and tell them today. Wishing you both good luck.

Weenurse · 27/11/2023 10:00

I also wonder about diabetes

OzziePopPop · 27/11/2023 10:00

The symptoms are classic for diabetes, it’s not hard to treat though (I’ve fostered dogs with diabetes). It’s absolutely essential he sees a vet today or tomorrow though as untreated diabetes is very serious. Treated, he’ll be able to live a normal (and very long) life.

I could be wrong, I’m not a vet… I’d lay money on being right though.

I wish him the best of luck at the vet, remember if it is diabetes it’s absolutely treatable and manageable! I live with insulin dependent diabetes myself so I do know 😀

Tropics4 · 27/11/2023 11:31

Thankyou, I have moved his appointment up to today at 3.15pm, the earliest I could get, i keep thinking perhaps change in food? But the water content is same. I really hope it's perfectly treatable as losing my previous dog was hideous, he lived until he was almost 18, so I kind of didn't expect a problem so soon with this little chap.

You could control his water source, weigh it and mark the time when you put it down then weigh it again and mark the time at a suitable point before you go to the vet.

TheSandgroper · 27/11/2023 13:29

And perhaps try and get a wee sample in a clean jar.

I am pretty much keeping note of what he is drinking as he drinks his water dish dry each time I refill it, I will on your suggestion measure in a jug the exact amount that is and give the vet a more precise measurement. Thankyou.

He looks well though, bright eyes, shiny coat?

Mindymomo · 27/11/2023 13:43

Could also be a urine infection, can you try and catch any wee to take to vets to check. Some dogs will just drink water as it’s there, but good thing you are seeing a vet.

margotrose · 27/11/2023 15:58

How did he get on at the vets OP?

Tropics4 · 27/11/2023 18:11

Hi Margo..the vet examined him, all seemed fine there, however he peed right in front of the vet, something he has never done, so he has had a blood test, he thinks maybe kidneys as it would be unusual to be diabetes so young - well in his opinion anyway. So I will wait for results tomorrow. I just can't stop cuddling him, I'm so worried. Thankyou for asking, very kind of you.

Hi Mindy, the vet totally discounted that, he doesn't have a temperature. He said it unusual in young male dogs, it's why he is going for the kidney and blood analysis, he seems to think that will give the most answers. I'm sort of thinking that perhaps the change to a higher protein food may have helped it along, I did tell the vet this, again he said it wouldn't affect him? I guess I won't know more until tomorrow, meanwhile I'm worried sick...

Sorry to hear he’s not well, what injection does he have?

margotrose · 27/11/2023 18:35

Oh bless him, hopefully you don't have to wait too long for answers.

Pinkpinkpink15 · 27/11/2023 19:45

@Tropics4

im so sorry to hear about the gorgeous wee boy.

given the vet got a very fresh sample! Did he test for diabetes?

Given he's so young & otherwise healthy I would think it's either curable or treatable. TRY not to scare yourself silly.

human diabetes when uncontrolled is a thirst/pee nightmare & it's a totally different need to pee than normal.... It's a complete 'need to... ooops'

apparently diabetes in dogs is relatively easy to keep under control.

let us know as soon as you get any news xxx

Diabetes,
Ddog was exactly the same, did they do BG? Age isn't really relevant.

Sorry to hear he’s not well, what injection does he have?

He has an anti allergy jab, in April he started with incessant itching, was on apoquel daily then this monthly jab instead.

OP posts:
CormoranEllacott · 27/11/2023 22:24

I would raise it being a possible side effect of the drug, with the vet. I believe Apoquel can cause diarrhea, polydipsia etc.

Apoquel® (oclacitinib)

Apoquel® is commonly prescribed to treat itching and inflammation in dogs.

Yes thankyou I will but he seems insistent it's kidneys, I would rather diabetes as it seems to have better long term prospects. I changed him recently to a higher protein food, now I think I've accidentally harmed him. I've boiled up some plain rice for his breakfast to see if it makes any difference. This evening he has carried on drinking like crazy then peeing like crazy. It's so upsetting, I just can't stop cuddling him, he anyway loves cuddles. He is so clever too..

Really!! well he no longer has that for some months, I really hope it isn't his kidneys, I probably love him way too much, i brought him 4 weeks after losing my previous beloved dog because i wasn't dealing with his loss very well, I can't lose him too. I will be on the vets case tomorrow.

Fingers crossed he’ll be feeling better soon, I know how worrying it is when pets are ill Flowers

Karwomannghia · 27/11/2023 22:53

My dog had Cushing’s and it made her drink incessantly.

helleborus · 27/11/2023 22:54

I would hesitate to feed rice until you know whether it is diabetes. Rice could push his blood glucose up even more.

Yes I was going to suggest Cushing’s also.
