Please explain to me - I've seen it loads recently. Are they ill? Bad legs? Any info gratefully received. Ta

Different breeds, ages, and physical abilities. Also dogs with flatter faces who have been overbred so much they can’t breathe properly anymore and can’t walk very far.

in summer our pavements are too hot for their paws and we have shih tzus that can't walk far in the heat

I see some in the park - on special doggy buggies and they are old or infirm dogs.

Apart from the couple of rather extravagantly dressed men who I sometimes see pushing their cats around in an actual baby pram. I think they are just… odd.

Yep, there is the dog in dog-trolley thing, where it is due to the dog having poor mobility. Good solution from caring owners.

And then there is the dog dressed in an elaborate outfit, in a Silver Cross style perambulator, in the wheelchair space on a bus. Those owners are the bonkers fur-baby ones.

DF bought one for her rather elderly DDog as he still enjoyed a walk but would flop when he'd had enough and wax too heavy to carry home.

So the elderly DDog got a walk, which he enjoyed. I can't see the problem?

My friend has one for her old cat. She hates the cat carrier and has to go to the vet regularly on the bus, so the cat stroller works great for her! She can pick it up, cat and all, and put it on the bus.

Since the cat likes it so much, she also brings her to the park and pond to observe the wildlife!

There used to be an old golden retriever in my neighborhood who went out in a buggy and I loved that his owners loved him so much.

I have an old dog that can't walk very far. I'd love a special push chair to put him in. So we can go for a nice walk, I could then push him for a bit while he rests then he could carry on.

As I don't have one he usually just wanders around the garden. I've had to carry him many a time when we've gone to the pub and he just can't make it back. He's a medium sized dog so quite heavy.

Dogs get a lot of value from the sights and smells of being outside, like people. So if they can’t walk for any reason then a pram is a good option if you can’t carry them.

EmpressaurusOfCats · 18/11/2023 09:09

Looking cute is a pretty awful reason for anything really. What’s the borderline between cute and twee?

MontyDonsBlueScarf · 18/11/2023 09:12

Basically the same reasons as people need wheelchairs.

I had one for my girl when arthritis limited her walking and we were unable to go on her long walks. She was a big girl and the dog pram was massive. I did feel a bit of an idiot pushing it.

However, it made her last year so much happier, she could go to all her old haunts and she would get out have a little walk and a swim, you could see her perk up. We also made so many people smile and chat to us as we went on our merry way.

We lost her October 22 and I will always be so happy she had so much extra time because of her chariot.

Some also have similar for cats @Greedybilly

Darklane · 18/11/2023 10:03

They are just so useful when you have an elderly or infirm dog, especially if you have more active ones as well. I got one when one of my tiny oldies developed arthritis & couldn’t walk far but loved to be out & about. It’s one of the pet stroller type. But a friend gave me another different one that’s more like a small shopping trolly with a mesh front on the bag thing. It’s smaller & more portable but she never liked riding in that so it’s just stuffed away somewhere.
As someone said, like wheelchairs for people. I also have one of the slings but they’re really only practical for very small breeds or young puppies. I don’t know why some people you meet get judgemental about what are basically mobility aids for dogs.

Definitelyrandom · 18/11/2023 10:23

Of the two near us, one has 3 legs and can’t walk very far and the other is a pug with spinal problems. Both do walk outside their prams, but get tired easily.

Maddy70 · 18/11/2023 10:24

My dog can only walk short distances so I take him in the pram down to the park so he can walk around there freely but he wouldn't have managed the walk down there

Greedybilly · 18/11/2023 10:31

Well thanku all I am now fully informed. There are some well cared for dogs out there.xx

I have a friend who bought a golf cart to give his elderly Labrador rides around the neighborhood. A pram is modest by contrast.

There is obviously people on this thread who know nothing about dogs in general and saying cos they look cute or just treating dog like baby . Really dog push chairs really improve the quality of life for old dogs and long may it continue .
