Tibetan terrier research

Hello- I’m in the very very early stages of dog research, will be a good year before we commit IF we decide it’s the right thing.

Growing up I knew a family who had four Tibetans (not all at once) three GORGEOUS one rescue who was traumatised and a nightmare so I’m aware there’s a range.

my question is, any Tibetan owners out there who want to share their experience, (and photos please!) and can anyone recommend an excellent UK breeder they have personally bought from so I can think about waiting lists etc?

this is not the only breed we are considering but it is top of my list…

We have a TT! He is 8 and called Chester. I adore him. Like you we got a TT as my parents neighbours had one and she is a lovely dog plus the non shedding and size was perfect for us.
Good bits. He's easygoing , happy with a long walk (he's not fast but he has loads of stamina and can go all day) but equally content with less. He is good natured and gentle. He's very cute and has a sweet personality. He was quite easy to train and has decent recall, not perfect but good.
Cons. He is stubborn, greedy and isn't particularly cuddly. For example at night he lies at my feet but doesn't cuddle in. He likes to be near but not on if you see what I mean. Aloofness is a characteristic of the breed.
We are having trouble with his eyes now but up until about a year ago he has had perfect health. The eye issue is likely just his bad luck it seems. Also he's not brilliant in pubs or whatever, too keen on the food and what's going on to settle down.
Hope this is helpful. I love him so much, he's my favourite in our house that's for sure! Also he's ambivalent to the cat which is also good.

😁 I love Tibetans.

I think divingworldchampion described them really well... although my current boy isn't a greedy bugger!
I think the girls are little divas, highly strung but a bit more cuddly!
I'd say they are not a traditional type dog that want to please their owners. Everything you ask them to do is met with the question: " ... and what's in it for me?"
The puppy stage can be challenging, all 3 that I have raised from pup were little land sharks with separation anxiety if you dared to go to the bathroom!
So be prepared to put a lot of hard work in for the first 12-18 months. Afterwards you'll have a great dog that will come with you wherever you go... as long as the dog approves of it!

As for puppy buying- Buyer Beware! Go with KC registered, all health tests done.
With KC you can check everything out online.
I would say due to the personality of these dogs, get one from a smaller breeder that keeps their dogs in their home. They are not kennel dogs!

Also, the UK breeding has a shortage of decent stud dogs, so it might take some time to find one with low inbreeding. If you can go with something that has a lower Inbreeding coefficient then the current breed average. I'll pm you for some breeders once I am home and all have settled for the evening.

PS, pic is my all wet with a spec of mud on her nose!

My friend has one
gorgeous dog but a bit of an escape artist.

We have a rescue Lhasa and their traits are very similar. Exceptionally stubborn, aloof & food guzzler. If we were to get another we would look at a TT.

Great pics Ylvamoon!

So, my friend has had two and my son (who has additional needs) gets very distressed around most dogs he loved both of them this one she has now he has actually "walked" (held the lead under heavy supervision) recall wise neither one have been good but temperament patience wise absolutely smashing this one is so chill we thought he was deaf he wasn't he was just super chill and unbothered by screaming children and school playgrounds if I was going to get a dog a TT would be top of my list

How are they with allergic kids? They’re stunning but have always loved them since Pippin!!

They are classed as hypoallergenic... but I think the best way to find out is spending time with some adult dogs.

Thank you all for this. I remember that the ones I knew didn’t do well with separation (fine for us) but wondered if this was common in the breed or how they had socialised them.
i remember that they were very chilled and yogic when comfortable but could take a dislike to a place…

Would 100% rather spend a lot more using a great responsible breeder.
