How big do pomskies grow?

user1477391263 · 16/11/2023 20:50

Not for me. Someone I know is planning to get a puppy.

However, dogs can't go on public transport in the country I'm living in unless they are in a closed carrier of some kind, so if the dog gets too big to go in a sling or carrying box, she's going to have issues as she does not have a car. I'm seeing VERY different reports online vis a vis size, and it does look like some pomskies are more similar to huskies in size. Do you think it is the kind of thing that you can predict by looking at the size of a puppy and knowing its age?

(I'm extremely dubious about this whole project, as she is a very recently-separated single mother with 18mo and 4yo daughters and I am seriously, seriously wondering how she is going to cope with dog care on top of all these responsibilities she has... sigh. I have two teens and a supportive partner and we got a rescue kitten in the spring, and even that creates work and mess etc.!).

So a cross breed husky?

MalcolmTuckersSwearBox · 16/11/2023 20:57

It’s a Pomeranian crossed with a husky @Greatfull. So a tiny toy sized breed bred with a large breed.

There’s no way of knowing what the final adult size will be with these dogs, they may inherit the Pom’s height genes or they may get the husky height, or end up somewhere in between. It’s one of the unknown outcomes with these kinds of crosses, you never know which traits will be inherited.

Bunnyannesummers · 16/11/2023 21:01

They can be any size and you don’t know until they’re fully grown.
whatever gene make up they have though, they always have the ability to do a husky scream.

MalcolmTuckersSwearBox · 16/11/2023 21:02

Oh and these kinds of crosses are always backyard or puppy farm bred, so zero in terms of health testing and ethical breeding practices.

Wolfiefan · 16/11/2023 21:04

Yeah. Whether it’s small enough to go on public transport could be the least of her worries with this.

Darklane · 16/11/2023 21:05

I’m just wondering how they managed it…..did he use a step ladder?

😂. I was wondering the same thing.

Hurroo · 16/11/2023 21:07

The thought of a poor little Pom attempting to birth half-Huskie pups is making me too angry and sad to think any further.

Greatfull · 16/11/2023 21:13

Sounds really sad

EverybodyJumpsuit · 16/11/2023 21:51

Is your friends sole motivation to get this breed that it looks cute? Bit dubious about any husky cross or otherwise given her circumstances.

TouchedByHisNoodlyAppendage · 16/11/2023 21:55

I have two. Both rescues, before anyone accuses me of being irresponsible.

The first, whose mother was a Siberian husky and father a Pom (yes, it’s artificial insemination - and never the other way round), is the size of a small Labrador and is very much not able to be carried easily.

The second, whose parents were both pomskies, is smaller, perhaps the size of a springer spaniel.

If your friend needs something small, then a pomsky whose parents and grandparents are also pomskies is likely to be smaller, but as others have said, it’s never a guarantee.

I adore mine - they have wonderful temperaments - but watch out for unscrupulous breeders who don’t care about important things like health, and churn out puppies for money (which is why my poor dogs ended up in the rescue).

Unbelievable just fucking unbelievable. I hate people sometimes.

PastTheGin · 16/11/2023 21:56

All the pomskies I have met have been relatively small and absolutely bonkers, a combination of the worst traits of both. They all were eventually kicked out of my dog group for being very unpleasant. I don’t think they are great family dogs.

Trying to contain anything that contains husky dna is nuts...
As are the people breeding husky cross breeds..

Grin

It's a frankenbreed - can be achieved only by artificial insemination.

The mother is always the husky. I think this cross is an abomination, but even the most ruthless of puppy farmers doesn't do it the other way round (because they don't want to pay for a caesarian)

TouchedByHisNoodlyAppendage · 16/11/2023 22:21

Interestingly, the ancestry of Pomeranian dogs traces back to breeds such as the American Eskimo Dog, Alaskan Malamute, Siberian Husky, Norwegian Elkhound, and Samoyed. So it’s not completely out there as a cross-breed. However, I appreciate the term ‘frankenbreed’ used above may be in regard to the use of artificial insemination.

The problem is that this current fad for ‘mini / teacup’ huskies is resulting in a lot of backyard breeders, who then dump their ‘duds’ and ex-breeders on local rescues. Which is how I ended up with mine (I appreciate there is a separate debate over whether the fact rescues take these cast-offs actually enables these irresponsible breeders).

I think a puppy and two small children sounds difficult. The breed is not an especially easy one to train (though the same could be said for many other breeds). Worth also considering the mountains of dog hair. And I mean mountains. Pomskies are double coated …

WetBandits · 16/11/2023 22:31

Gosh, what a horrible idea. Pomeranians and Huskies are SO different, why would anyone want to cross them?

If you want a dog that looks like a Husky but is a bit smaller and less nuts, the Klee Kai is right there.

user1477391263 · 17/11/2023 02:51

As I suspected, Not A Good Idea.

Wondering if I could persuade her to look into a dark shiba inu instead (at least they have an established track record of being a predictable size and of basically being OK as city dogs), and ideally waiting for a bit before getting one?

It's hard to say anything without feeling like a fun sponge. I just don't think that getting a puppy as an emotionally charged response to a stressful life event (marriage breakup) is a good idea.

I have one other friend who has a dog and she says the first nine months or so were a nightmare. The puppy basically leaped around the room all day like something on a spring, and chewed everything in sight! She has done a good job training him, but then she waited till her youngest was six, and has a partner she can tag-team with. You can't take dogs into shop or restaurants here, so having a dog as a single parent looks very restrictive to me.

This. Huskies are working dogs. The idea of restraining that in a small 'cute' body is ridiculous.

Just get your friend to buy an actual breed she likes.

Or a pet rock.

Appleblum · 17/11/2023 03:13

Pomskies are really popular where I am... always bump into a few of them out and about. They are bred for people who want the look of a husky but live in small spaces and the father is always the pomeranian. Size wise I'd consider them medium sized, definitely smaller than a husky.

SIL has a pomsky that we've babysat for several times. He's very cute and affectionate, highly intelligent, and very food motivated. I have to walk him for 30mins twice a day and he's the gentlest dog I've ever met, very good and calm around children.

HamBone · 17/11/2023 03:23

If she wants a small, family-friendly dog, why doesn’t she get an actual Pomeranian? Ours was a rescue so we have no idea how he was bred, but the vet tells us that he’s mainly Pom, possibly with a great-grandparent who was another small dog breed. 😁

Pomeranians are playful and affectionate, ours loves children and the larger ones don’t get beyond 15-17 lbs. I haven’t found the hair shedding too bad if you keep them groomed and vacuum regularly.

tabulahrasa · 17/11/2023 03:40

If she wants a mini husky... someone already did that.

Alaskan Klee Kai

i know chuff all about them other than they’re a small companion spitz type bred to look like tiny huskies.

But they’ll be more predictable than a random cross.

I was going to say this, if they're focusing on looks, the KleeKai already exists.

There are other smallish Spitz breeds that exist too, like the Schipperke and Keeshond. Shiba Inus too (but possibly still too big to pick up and carry around, they're more small Spaniel sized).

Your friend needs to be prepared for the personality traits of these Spitz family (of which the Pomeranian does belong) breeds as well as the looks though. They're not necessarily easy dogs and can be stubborn. I have a Pom x Chi (rehomed not bought) and she has strong, loud, opinions on everything. Something to bare in mind if your friend is in a city and has close neighbours who may not appreciate barking (and howling, Husky types in particular are VERY good at howling).

Ylvamoon · 17/11/2023 12:13

Poor parents- even if dad is the pomeranian... there is nothing natural or animal friendly about this cross.

HamBone · 17/11/2023 12:28

@bunnygeek 🤣🤣 Yes, our Pom is quite opinionated as well, although he doesn’t howl. Luckily his good nature has won over our neighbors who also have opinionated dogs.
