Best breed(s) for a young family?

As title suggests we are discussing potentially getting a dog and would like some thoughts on what the best breed for our family might be:

•two small children aged 2 and 5
•I'm a SAHM so dog will not be alone
•this would be our first dog
•we have a small garden and live in a rural area close to woodlands and fields
•would prefer a breed that does not have extremely high energy
•one walk a day for around an hour but can do two walks if needed

Thank you Smile

Golden retrievers are adorable but they are really large dogs, I don’t think they’re suitable anything less than a generous sized home with owners with lots of time to dedicate to their care.

We got a show cocker when out kids were 1&4 BUT he was 3 via a rescue so not a puppy. Puppies are hard work and if you haven't had one before imagine it and then times that by ten 😂 You do need a lot of patience .

Dc and ddogs are a fantastic combination well managed and well raised.. Ime.

In mine, too.
Hard work, but possible. Our younger two DC cannot remember a time before we had a dog.

The only thing I'd say is make sure you factor in some time and headspace for training.

Tibetan Terrier, love them, but wait until the children are a little older. Also TTs are ridiculously naughty as well as being delightful, cuddly, fun, caring and gorgeous

Don't get a TT as a first dog with young children... unless you want a permanent toddler!
They are great dogs (and not a terrier), but demand all a lot of your attention.

Good breeds are as mentioned Whipped, a Poodle or even a Chinese Crested Dog (if you want something exotic!)

My whippets have good recall, not all of them do a runner!

Whippets are robust enough to be around a toddler and need to wear coats. I'd go for a lovely show lab. There's really no reason you can't have a puppy and two small kids if you're home all day.

Same with my whippets, better recall than pretty much every other dog we meet when we are out.

And as for not robust enough to deal with toddlers...have you ever even had a whippet? 🤣

They share a story every night.. They are 9 and 10 now... Absolutely nothing warms my heart as much as seeing dc oozing goodness for that ddog...

I don't know if this is helpful, but I found this article on best family dog breeds>https://www.keystonepuppies.com/blog/choosing-a-breed/best-family-dog-breeds.

My family personally has a miniature schnauzer who is great with my son (1 years old) and daughter (5 years old). She had quite the bit of energy when she was a pup, but now has tamed down a little :)
