Very itchy dog but no obvious fleas

Just that really.

Noticed our 9 year old Labradoodle has been constantly nibbling at his skin or scratching himself recently. He has a rash now on his stomach (where the skin is visible) and little areas of red on his back legs, rump area.

For context, he doesn’t mix with other dogs at all and we have no other pets. He only goes on street walks (he had a serious injury last year and hasn’t been allowed of the lead since then).

It occurred to me that it could be fleas but when I’ve checked I can’t see anything flea like at all. He does have quite a bit of dry skin however and dandruff comes off on the brush, this is a new thing.

I’ve treated him for fleas just in case, washed and sprayed his bed and the carpets where he lies. I don’t want to do a full on flea blitz if he doesn’t have fleas, so wondered if anyone has had a similar experience and if so, what was it?

TIA

Have you considered food allergies?

Wolfiefan · 12/11/2023 17:26

Treated for fleas with what?

margotrose · 12/11/2023 17:27

Allergies. Very common and can develop in adulthood. You can give dogs Piriton but I'd suggest a vet visit if this isn't usual for your dog. Good luck!

With a Spot On treatment

I haven’t but only because he hasn’t changed his food and he hasn’t had anything different

Honestly, I'd go to the vets.

BodgerSparkins · 12/11/2023 18:02

Go to the vets, it could be any number of things. Does he dig a lot?

What routine flea and tick preventative is he on?

Wolfiefan · 12/11/2023 18:03

Not all spot on treatments work.

newnamenellie · 12/11/2023 18:04

No I know. I just did it as a precaution, only did it about 48 hours ago so hard to tell if it’s made a difference or not. As I said, no obvious signs of fleas other than an itchy dog! I’ll go to the vet if it continues

Vets

He could have any number of things from a bug bite, reaction to a chemical you cleaned the floor with to liver problems.

I had a dog who developed a nasty allergy to blueberries, he was so itchy and red.
He loved them and had them quite often as he was raw fed
Stopped giving them to him and he cleared up in no time

BodgerSparkins · 12/11/2023 18:09

Also wash his bed and do a good hoover and mop around that area

peebles32 · 12/11/2023 18:09

My dog was the same! We bathed in hibiscrub and it all went away!

Shishh · 12/11/2023 18:11

Thisnis so weird.

I'm going through exactly the same thing.

I have generally itchy dogs (allergies) but the last week or so all 3 have been going crazy, trying to nibble their back ends and all sorts.

I've checked all 3 of them half a dozen times and can't see a single flea.

I started them on probiotics for itching and am wondering if it's them causing more??

I'm going to do them a flea bath and treatment.

needtonamechangeforthis1 · 12/11/2023 18:16

Have you changed your own washing powder? Or any cleaning products?

I'd double check the food. Allergies can come from nowhere and also dog food companies don't always advertise when they have altered their recipes. Dog food labelling rules are nowhere near as strict.

DanceWithYourBalloon · 12/11/2023 18:16

Mites! My dog gets them every now and then. Absolute pain in the bum.

Only thing that gets rid is vet prescribed spray and a dusting of food grade diatomaceous earth on the affected area.

tsmainsqueeze · 12/11/2023 20:37

vet nurse here , i would see vet asap its miserable being itchy , get his anal glands checked too ,one of my dogs gets itchy and hypersensitive when his glands are full .

margotrose · 12/11/2023 20:45

Please get him to the vets tomorrow - it must be miserable being itchy all the time.

Lastqueenofscotland2 · 12/11/2023 22:19

I used to have a spaniel who would get SO itchy every winter as the central heating seemed to dry his skin out

Girliefriendlikespuppies · 14/11/2023 19:24

My dog gets like this if he eats chicken, it took me a while to figure it out.
