What breed do we need?

We’re a family of four, two hybrid working adults (so someone is usually home most days) and two teens. We’ve got a decent sized garden and access to lots to of open space. We like walking, but like most people, we’re time poor. Could manage two half hour walks every day plus a couple of extra 2 hour walks in the week and at weekends. We go away a lot (mostly camping so not a problem) and will hire good doggy daycare if necessary.

We have a cat and we’re after a breed that can be pretty low maintenance. I’ve grown up with springer spaniels and jack Russell Terriers, gorgous dogs but I think we’re probably after something more chilled.

Is there a breed that might suit us? I think we could offer the right dog lots of love and country walks, but they need to be able to relax and not chase the cat.

What would you suggest?

We have a Samoyed, relatively needy dog but so smart and fun!

We're also time poor but have had our dog 1.5 years now and we've built her into our lives. She has two walks at least every day but often travels with us in the car to various places and gets out and sniffs / socialises with plenty of other dogs and people. She goes running with my DH too 3-4 times a week and when we walk her she chases around a lot with eithe us or birds/rabbits /squirrels etc so gets a hell of a lot done in that half hour - hour walk. She also gets a quick 15-30
Mins before bed and just takes us where she wants to go around the area we live in
When we work she settles herself down for snoozes and she gets lots of ball throwing during our breaks in the day. She hardly stops to be honest!
We book breaks away that include her too, took her to Europe this summer, weekend in center parcs - she's one of the family and loved life - get a dog and ignore people who say not to!

I second a cavalier king Charles spaniel they're very sweet & don't need excessive exercise, they are prone to being overweight so don't overfeed but they're great little dogs

My son got a basset hound, they don’t need a lot of walking. But a puppy takes up a lot of time. Remember you’ll always need to be back from places after a few hours or pay for dog walkers. Adore my dog, but he costs me a lot of money, he’s worth it of course but if you’re time poor I’d get a cat
