Puppy has realised she can jump off the bed

She's 7 months old. Very good. She has a crate next to me but for last few months she's just slept in my bed.

Last couple of weeks when she's needed to toilet in the night she's jumped down, I've taken her, then she goes straight back to sleep.

But now she's realised there's a while other bedroomy world outside the bed.

I'm so tired and she had a wee and a poo but just keeps jumping down.

So I've put her in her crate and she's crying now :(

I brought her back into bed and she got comfy for a few mins but jumped down again.

So back into the crate.

I wish she would just go to sleep :(

Same thing again tonight. Now she's crying in her crate.

I always wanted her to sleep in bed with me but she just won't settle the last few nights.

My other dogs sleep downstairs

Why can't she sleep where she wants?

Dotcheck · 10/11/2023 23:40

This is what dogs do? Leave the door open, let them decide where to settle. You carry on sleeping.
Why is this a problem?

margotrose · 10/11/2023 23:42

It's completely normal for dogs to move around during the night in the way you describe, especially puppies.

If you can't sleep with her in your room with you then you'll need to train her to sleep elsewhere.

KateyCuckoo · 10/11/2023 23:16

Why can't she sleep where she wants?

She's not sleeping.

She's getting down and chewing the legs of my dresser or the corner of my rug. She's moving about in the dark pulling on the curtains ect

It's not safe to just leave her to it, she might hurt herself.

OP posts:
Pupadupa · 11/11/2023 09:25

Also she's tiny so she could hurt herself jumping down in the dark and when she decides she wants to get back in bed she's too small to get back up so cries.

So letting her get on with it isn't a option.

Then you need to go back to basics and train her to sleep in her crate.

Darklane · 11/11/2023 12:39

For her safety, that of your furniture! And your sanity, you need to sleep, you need to have her sleep back-in her crate, or with your other dogs till she’s older & through the manic puppy play & teenage phase. No reason why then, once she’s calmed down which they do, she shouldn’t come & sleep with you in bed again.

Pupadupa · 11/11/2023 16:01

I'll have to crate train her.

I wouldn't leave her with the other dogs as I have an older grumpy female who tells her off a little too enthusiastically sometimes.

Urgh. This is going to be difficult as I love her being in bed with me :(

Personally I hate dogs in my bedroom as they do wander about and lick themselves and snore and runabout in their dreams Smile

(or train them to sleep downstairs and have a lovely undisturbed night in your own bed )

What on earth did you expect if you trained her to sleep on your bed?? She’s a dog, of course she’s going to move around/jump down instead of lying still beside you all night.

Crate training will be much more difficult now that she’s older and used to sleeping with you. Our 9 month old was crate trained from day 1, she’s not allowed upstairs or on beds whatsoever both for our sanity and her safety. We now allow her free rein of downstairs at night and even now she still chooses to sleep in her (open) crate

My last dog didn't and that's all I ahve to base my knowledge off. She just slept like a log till she was summoned off the bed.

I know all dogs are different but puppy was same until 2 nights ago. That's months and months of sleeping peacefully.

Do you have anything constructive to offer or are just just telling me I should hire a time machine 🙄

Is it possible to block an area off next to your bed so she can sleep in her own bed by you?

My pup slept in my room by my bed in a blocked off area since the day she came home, she used to wake at 6am and get on my bed for a cuddle and a nap which I really didn't mind. After a few months these wake ups got earlier and earlier which I wasn't happy about because she would fidget more which kept waking me up because I was worried about her falling off of my high bed.

Then when she got to about your dog's age she refused to start off her bed time in her own bed and decided to bark to be in mine. 🙄 I tried having her in my bed the whole night but she was a pain, wouldn't settle to sleep for ages and then I didn't sleep properly for her fidgeting and my worrying.

I decided she could no longer be on my bed at all because I'd never get any sleep. The first two and a half nights were hard, she'd bark/whine at the start of the night with her paws on the bed and eventually she'd settle but would keep waking to try again and I'd just ignore her. By the third night she got the picture and since then she's been as good as gold. She goes straight to her bed, waits for me to put her blankets over her and give her a treat and then doesn't make a peep the whole night.

For your sanity/sleep you need to give her her own area with a bed. The first few nights will be hard but then you'll be glad you did it. You can always let her back on your bed when she's no longer a chewer that wants to get up to mischief.

Oh and my dog loves her crate downstairs but would not sleep in it in my room at all and I think it's because she was already used to having her own area up there rather than a crate? I don't know but if yours isn't already used to a crate at all then she'd probably be better off having an area otherwise she will be going to get used to 2 new changes.

Completely unhelpful and judgy

Aria20 · 11/11/2023 20:07

What type of dog is she? I ask as around 7 months could be due her first season which might explain needing toilet more and fidgeting etc - if it is that you won't want her in your bed for a while anyway as she'll be bleeding and licking herself a lot!

Pupadupa · 11/11/2023 20:58

She's a chihuahua and only 2kg.

I don't mind her moving around the bed at all. It's juts not safe for her to jump down. She has stairs which she uses downstairs but on the bed she just ignores them and flings herself to the ground.

OP posts:
nottaotter · 11/11/2023 22:33

Is there something that is unsettling her? If she has been so good about sleeping through and going straight back to sleep after a wee/poo.

Have you got room for a larger pen in your room? Or would she be more settled in a crate downstairs with the other dogs?

I agree about keeping her separate from older female, we always crate our younger female and leave other one out when no one is around even though they are generally fine.

ismu · 16/11/2023 11:28

If you want to train her to stay on your bed you could try tethering her on a house lead once she's toileted, bring her back up and then just keep her on the lead in the bed till she settles, then gently remove it. It means you won't be able to fall back to sleep until she's settled but after a few nights she will probably get back into routine especially if she's been used to it before.
