Conjunctivitis

Dog is 18 months old and otherwise healthy. He spent the day at doggy daycare. At 5.30pm he came home apparently fine.
At 6.30 I noticed his eye was a bit gunky but thought nothing of it. By 8.30pm he was obviously miserable. Now his eye is completely closed and he's flat out in his cage.
The vet opens at 8am. Is there anything I can do for him tonight?
Should I wash it? Despite his not wanting to be handled. Or should I leave him in peace?

I may be wrong but I think I've washed around my dogs eye with cooled boiled water with a bit of salt in it before and a cotton pad.

My vet told me that dog eye drops for conjunctivitis are the same as human eye drops, so I always keep some just in case.

Cooled teabags. Mine had conjunctivitis as a pup and could I get the eye drops in? Could I buggery. I had a brew (had to remove the teabag before adding the milk which is a terrible thing up here haha), let the bag cool and wiped the eyes. Worked a treat.

Another vote for bathing with cold tea. We had always done it then the vet recommended it.

Yep cold tea here too for very mild cases. Our vet suggests it over drops as it’s cheaper!
