Do you feed your dog raw?

OP posts:
Smartfox · 19/10/2023 19:49

Yes

HappiestSleeping · 19/10/2023 20:34

Not any more.

KathieFerrars · 19/10/2023 20:48

Yes. She wolfs it down. Less poo and not stinky.

Wanderinghome · 19/10/2023 20:56

I use raw food.

WinterStar1 · 19/10/2023 20:57

Yes, have done for years now

Hmmmbetterchangethis · 19/10/2023 20:59

Tinned or dry, kibble style food for dogs is equivalent to eating pot noodle/McDonald’s for every meal. You can live on it, but not thrive…..

Riverlee · 19/10/2023 20:59

I do 50:50 - butternut box/kibble

MollyMarples · 19/10/2023 21:00

Yes

FastFood · 19/10/2023 21:35

Yes, 75% raw, 25% kibbles.

BellaVita · 19/10/2023 21:42

Because I like giving my dog a lot more variety than raw food allows
He is intolerant to chicken and seems to do much better having the same kind of variety that I have in my diet as an omnivore Ie lots of different meals rather than three in rotation.

I can cope with picking up an extra poo a day. He has no tummy trouble.

Also.. it's much much nicer not to have to disinfect everything all the time.

AgMaggy · 19/10/2023 22:53

There’s much more variety in raw than other types of food surely? Many more proteins available than other foods.

Butterkist8 · 19/10/2023 23:02

No and I'm seeing a move away from raw among my dog owner friends.

Why not?

I have a rescue who was on a raw diet when I got him. We switched for two reasons. Firstly, one of my family has immune issues, and there is a risk of cross contamination. Secondly, if we want to go camping, the logistics of raw are a challenge.

I did some research about whether there is any scientific evidence about raw being any better but I couldn't find any. The only thing I could find confirmed that there is a considerable risk of cross contamination.

All the stories of smaller poo etc are anecdotal. Since switching to a quality dry food, I have seen no difference in poo / flatulence etc which IMHO would be expected if the dry food is good quality and has no filler.

Also, I am able to use the dry food for training and can control his intake more readily than with raw, and can fill kong toys etc with it. All in, a definite win I'd say.

I live in the UK where there are minimum standards for all dog foods if that makes any difference. I switched to Burns complete.

Thanks @HappiestSleeping all good points.

Kibble (Millie's wolfheart)
Tins (Millie's wolfheart, lilys kitchen)
Home cooked food (I use lilys kitchen recipes)
Different dog cooked food
Anything that looks nice when I go to the shops to be honest. As I say, he gets the same variety (and hopefully same quality) that I would feed myself.

I suppose I should clarify then and say if I wanted to feed my dog ten different meals every week this would be very difficult with a dog only on raw or at least would feel quite samey.
There was another poster that mentioned training treats etc and agree with everything she says.

Steppingintome · 23/10/2023 06:23

I used to but I’d always forget to take it out of the freezer or hate the clean up after. Plus DH hated preparing it so it would always be down to me to feed the dog. We’d argue all the time and the kids (2x older teenagers and an adult) would say it’s gross and they are not feeding her.

we switched to wolfworthy which is a raw kibble. This is much easier for us all to feed the god damn dog haha. Even the kids can feed the dog. Dog loves it and is thriving. Happy me, happy dog, happy hubby. Kids are never happy but hey can’t win ‘em all 😂
