Dog has been out all night

My bloody stupid H (not DH today!) has left our dog out all night. He let her out for her final toilet as he does every night and didn't take her back in meaning he also left the bloody doors unlocked all night too.

Thank god it wasn't freezing over night but I'm so upset at his stupidity. She's only 7.5kgs so this could've had dire consequences. Thankfully she seems and her normal happy self this morning. I'm so so angry.

If you’re in the UK she’d be fine. We accidentally left our last dog out all night once in the autumn and she just laid down and slept. Current one would shout the place down!

Nomorecoconutboosts · 18/10/2023 10:16

Poor dog
mine’s a similar size but he hammers with his paws at any shut door so although I wouldn’t put it past dh to forget him the dog would alert us.

glad to hear your dog seems ok

KStockHERO · 18/10/2023 10:16

Oh god, that's awful, OP.

I'd be absolutely beyond furious with DP if he did that - What a horrible, careless, thoughtless thing to do.

But, its done now. The dog's alive and seems absolutely fine. It wasn't too cold last night (assuming you're in the UK) and it was only one night. There are plenty of dogs all over the world who sleep outside every night for various reasons and are fine.

I'm not saying its no big deal - its fucking huge that you're DP did this - I just mean don't dwell on it. Try and avoid intrusive thoughts.

Spoil your dog absolutely rotten for the next few days and she'll bounce back.

MrsPerfect12 · 18/10/2023 12:38

Thank you, I am in the UK and thankfully it was mild and dry last night. She's not much a barker so she's wasn't barking as I would've heard her.
Now I feel like I'm going to have to check the door is locked and the dog is in.

I'd be livid if it was my dog the poor things. I was so cold l when I went to walk the dog at 10pm last night

KStockHERO · 18/10/2023 12:47

At some point in the next few weeks, I'd be tempted to send DP out on a garden mission one night and then 'accidentally' leave/lock him out there all fucking night for a while. See how he likes it.

But, yes, definitely check the dog's in and the door's locked each night. For ever a while, I'd remind DP every single night of why you're doing this.
Six years ago, DP wasn't paying attention on a dog-walk, the dog leapt over a storm drain but landed slightly short so her back legs went down the grate and were cut to ribbons. I've reminded DP about this every single day since 😆

Assuming he didn't do it on purpose, and it was just an accident. Accidents happen, and this time no one got hurt. Take a breath in and move on.

TheCupboardUnderTheStairsAtTheMojoDojoCasaHouse · 18/10/2023 14:42

I did this once - let the dog out for a wee, and promptly fell asleep on the sofa next to the back door. Didn't wake up for hours.

I was surprised ddog didn't bark and wake me up.

I suspect more people have done it than would admit to it!

margotrose · 18/10/2023 16:00

DH has never left the dog out, but he has locked our cats out overnight multiple times. They were furious Grin

Janiie · 18/10/2023 16:52

How weird though, I mean to not realise the dog wasnt present and then to not lock up, is he a bit hopeless generally or is this a one one off?

Ohyoudodoyou · 18/10/2023 17:00

Lock your husband out and let the dog sleep in your bed, it won't happen again!
(Poor dog, I'd be devastated if I did this but... in fairness to your husband we spend half our lives shouting "is the dog with you" around the house, and we do panic when we can't find it.)

He was finishing off some work before bed, let the dog out went to his desk to tidy up and didn't go back to let her in. I would say he was "preoccupied" he's not hopeless but he's done similar before. Just not with the dog.

Oh no! My dog would be beside himself. Mind you he would bark at the door to be let in and he has a very loud bark and is soon notice the he wasn’t keeping my feet warm in bed. I’d be furious with DH!

Lookatmytoes · 19/10/2023 19:03

Accidents happen. It ended up ok - I would let go of the anger and we what systems you can put in place so he doesn’t do it again. I could do this very easily and it wouldn’t reflect my intention. I am forever getting out of bed to check on various pets.
