Moving back from raw to kibble

Just that really. My DDog really hates raw food ( takes ages to eat it, leaves it, but is crazy excited for any other food) so I'm wondering about putting him back into kibble. Has anyone done this and did you do it gradually or just switch over ?

I did. We have 6 dogs, some of them liked it but some didn't, so I switched them all back on to kibble.

I took the opportunity to change brand at the same time, so I did it gradually - I always do it over a period of 10 days, just to be on the safe side.

Kibble to raw you can just change

Raw to Kibble go slowly and take several days to make the change

Mine doesn't like kibble and honestly I feel like it's not a brilliant quality food as it's so processed but we just can't really afford to go fully onto high quality fresh/canned food.

We've gone for a half way house...

  • Half kibble
  • Mixed with half a can of Lily's which is basically proper cooked meat/offal, veg and such (you actually see the pieces of veg)
  • Three squirts of salmon oil (from Amazon for dogs and cats, really helps a shiny coat and no dry skin)
  • She gets bits of dog-friendly leftovers or parts of my meals (meat, veg, fish, dairy - I know this is borderline but she loves it and I don't give her a lot).

Occasional change like a raw egg in her dinner.

She's as happy as Larry on this and I feel like she gets a good variety of foods and her coat is the best it's ever been.

Actual kibble makes such gross poos compared to raw. Have you tried freeze dried raw instead? It’s dry, kibble like pieces.

rbe78 · 16/10/2023 09:50

It depends what kind of kibble you go for.

Something that is high protein and grain free is just as nutritous as raw - e.g. Eden or Wolfheart. We use Eden, which is 80% meat/fish/egg, all human-grade. No gross poos beause it's not just full of filler carbs like the cheaper kibbles.

It's also raw-feeding compatible, so you can feed alongside raw, gradually transition, or just swap over if you want. I think it's always best to introduce a new diet gradually over a week or two though.

This wasn't my experience. I switched from raw to kibble and there was no change in poo (consistency, volume, or smell), or flatulence.

@Octobernights45673 - as long as you get a good quality kibble, you should be fine. I used Burns complete and switched gradually over a week or so. I switched for logistic reasons, although in doing my research (as I'd read a lot about how much better a raw diet is) I could find no scientific evidence to support a raw diet being any more beneficial than 'normal' food, wet or dry. That's not to say that it isn't, just that there is no research (that I could find, and I looked hard).

If your dog has "gross poos" on any food then something is wrong.

Have you had a look at Butternut Box? I don't like raw or Kibble but Butternut box is like food you'd eat yourself and they Definitely like it!

DogDream · 16/10/2023 12:12

Only ‘gross’ to me. They’re perfectly normal but in comparison to raw poos they’re typical ‘dog poo’ poos (which are gross). Raw poos are an absolute dream: Small and no smell!

Sorry that was in reply to @margotrose. (I still can’t see the point in the reply feature over quote?)

Mine has small and no smell poos on kibble, exactly the same as when he was on raw. Guess it depends on the kibble. 🤷‍♂️

Hi, I have recently taken my dog off raw as he suddenly started having terrible diarrhea and sickness and he just didn't seem that keen anymore. I am wondering whether the raw had some contamination on it as his poos were great on it before. I have put him on butternut box and hes been fine since then and i give him a good quality kibble as well...Canagan, its pricey but it's good. His poos are back to being good now.

A healthy dog poo really shouldn't be "gross". My dog is fed wet and kibble and his poos are easy to pick up and relatively odourless. They're certainly no worse than the dogs I walk who are fed raw, anyway.

Puffwiththegreeneyes · 16/10/2023 15:57

Dog poo is always grim 😂 I agree that there are variants of grim (I'm looking at you green Mr whippy after a dip in the pond) but it's never pleasant.

It rather depends on the auality of your kibble !

Well yes, I don't really think any kind of poo can be described as pleasant Grin
