Nearly 15 year old dog whining

My almost 15 year old dog is whining and wandering around the house when it gets dark. This has been going on for while. She doesn't settle even when someone is with her. When we leave her for the night she seems ok.

Is there anything we can do? Our evenings are a little stressed listening to her. She's also become food obsessed, slightly deaf and has cataracts developing. She's on Yumove calming tablets but I don't think they do anything!

Can you have her next to you in the bed? Does she need to toilet more frequently?
have you tried all the lights on - could be her eyesight?

id be going to the vet in case its doggy dementia

OhDoSitDownAndShutUp · 14/10/2023 15:56

She's elderly, and just like old humans, her hearing and eyesight are going. She probably can't see very well in the dark now. Get a nightlight or leave a lamp on? Has she got Arthritis? It might be dementia. One of my cats became like it when she was old.

I'm sorry-but it sounds like dementia. What does the vet say?.

flippyflappy · 14/10/2023 19:27

I took her to the vet a year ago when it first started and they just said could be dementia. That was it. I can't have her in my room as she won't settle. She sleeps in the lounge with a light on and she's ok.
Any ideas how to get her to settle when I'm with her in the evening?! Are there any dog dementia drugs?
She does have a bit of stiff joints, but goes on a daily walk. Doesn't seem to be in pain.

Aktivait tablets might be worth a try, my old boy improved on them.

Mumteedum · 14/10/2023 19:32

Aw I'm sorry. It does sound like dementia. My old boy had it and although the vet prescribed supplements, I can't say they did anything. It's very hard.

I'm sorry but at 15 I think you need to think about euthanasia. She's clearly distressed if she's wandering and whining. It's been going on a year I think you need to be preparing yourselves Flowers.

flippyflappy · 14/10/2023 20:27

In the day time she's fine. I wouldn't say she needed to be put to sleep. And at night when we're in bed she's fine. It's simply the hours when we're up and it's dark -bit odd really!
I could take her back to the vet, but she hates going, so was just looking for a bit of advice before I do that! She eats well, has no toileting problems and doesn't seem to be in pain.

Doggy dementia, my girl had it, Aktivait gave her a few more relatively normal years, you don't need the vet to get that. Thundershirt when she got anxious.

margotrose · 14/10/2023 22:57

It's dementia.

Please go back to the vet as there is medication that can help them feel more secure.

Bordercolliesarebest1 · 20/10/2023 09:43

I agree with other posters about dementia. Activait certainly helped my boy, although for the last 18 months of his life l slept downstairs with him. I wouldn't pts if she still has a good quality of life.

flippyflappy · 21/10/2023 09:20

Thanks for all the advice. I got her heated sleeping pad out this week as it's been chillier...the whining has dramatically reduced. It must be comforting her. I will take her to the vets in a couple of weeks when I'm on annual leave.
