Insurance for puppy

I will be collecting my 8 week old cocker spaniel next week. He has been vet checked and parents are tested. I have been looking at what insurance I should get but I am going around in circles.
How much cover should I get?
Is lifetime cover worth it for a pup?
Which companies are best or are there some I should avoid?

Yes to lifetime.

We are with Many Pets. Very good cover for the price for our older pup but they are very slow to pay out. They took 6 months to pay our vets for a claim they made (caught a vomiting bug as a young pup and needed fluids) so they won't deal with them anymore direct. We have just had our renewal and it's gone down so we're going to stick with it but we have the funds to pay and then claim so that's fine. If you don't I'd be very wary of using them.

We couldn't find anything like the cover for the price though.

Lifetime yes and as high as possible.
If your pup has any joint issues/needs an op then the costs mount up very fast.
We're with Animal Friends for our Lab, thankfully never had to claim but my friend is with them too and they pay out reasonably quickly.

Definitely yes to lifetime.

Your premiums may go up, your dog's treatment might bust the ceilings of your cover, but you will still have cover that resets annually.

I'd say that, for puppy/young dog, you need at least £7k for vet insurance (investigation tests and an operation can easily rack up costs) but go as high as you think you can afford.

Remember that whatever you choose for your owns dogs health, you need third party cover in case your dog causes damage or injury (I think several £mil is pretty standard)

Lifetime cover and the highest level you can afford. We're with Tesco and have 15k a year worth of lifetime cover - they've been excellent.

We insure our cats with them too and have never had a problem. They're helpful, pay out quickly and aren't overly expensive.

BTW, we're with Many Pets, who seemed to put their prices up across the board in the last year, which was v unpopular (of course) but their service seems to be good (certainly has been for the two claims we had with them)

PetPlan also gets v good reviews and seems to be the one vets are most happy to deal with direct (usually it's pay upfront and claim back)

Thank you All. I will look at lifetime cover and at least 7k a year.

Thank you All. I will look at lifetime cover and at least 7k a year.

I would go for more than 7k if you can afford it.

I know it seems like a lot but a couple of scans and surgery could easily come to that. It really doesn't take much.

It's also worth remembering that OOH vet care can be double or even triple what you'd pay during the week.

I have Tesco lifetime cover since a puppy. It has been excellent until this point though now expensive, he's had over £15k of surgery. I'm waiting on a £8k surgery bill to be paid (they pay the vets directly thankfully)

Yes to lifetime cover and I'd highly recommend pet plan. Our cocker has ongoing health issues and we have never had to pay upfront and nothing has ever been refused. Our vet deals with them directly so no paperwork on my end. We pay about £50 a month and £100 annual excess.

I’ve just insured my 8wk old mini schnauzer with Waggel, £7k of cover lifetime. Obviously I haven’t claimed yet but they came Which recommended and they only do one kind of policy so not too confusing to buy
