Pooch and Mutt or Barking Heads?

Hi
Looking to cut down on our dog costs (he eats better than we do!). Currently raw fed, sensitive tum, always hungry…..

P and M have a primal range, with 80% meat, but it’s £15 a month more than BH.

What do people think of the two ranges?

My dog was on BH. She absolutely loved it. She was a rescue and was on Eukanuba when we got her. On BH her coat was glorious.

Unfortunately she was then diagnosed with pancreatitis so she’s now on Tails and was Hills initially.
Basically I’m saying B&H is good!

It depends! typical dog trainer answer.

P&M is much higher meat content - if that is what you dog is happier on and if coming from raw will be more what your dog is used to

BH has a higher carb content which some dogs prefer. Carb heavy food can increase weight on dogs so if that is what is needed. It will be less like the raw they have been on already.

Feeding guides suggest that you will need to feed more of the BH so it may not be cheaper as it seems

Have you looked at Nature Diet , it’s excellent and very reasonable .

Any reason you want to stick to raw?

LoubylooLucy · 09/10/2023 22:43

He came to us as a puppy on Skinners field and trial and then had sloppy poop 💩. Tried a couple of other dry foods and guru cold pressed, but they all had the same result. Thinking back though, maybe a switched too quickly…,
Raw has worked well but it’s so expensive.
Ive ordered a trial bag of P and M x

I ask as mine came to me already on a raw diet. I'd heard all the same things, however for us, raw is a pain due to not being able to go camping so easily, and also the risk of cross contamination.

So, I did some research and found that there isn't any scientific evidence that raw is any better than 'normal' food (as long as the normal food is of good quality). That isn't too say that raw isn't better, just that nobody has really researched it properly (that I could find anyway).

Having looked into the dry food options, I landed on Burns complete sensitive. No difference in any area (poo / flatulence / energy etc), and it is a lot easier logistically. Other advantages are that I can use it as part of his training which makes keeping control of his weight easier. It is more reasonably priced too.

Thanks! I’ll add it to the list of foods to look at!

Millies Wolfheart is worth a look too. My older pup is on the 70:30 with a bit of BH wet mixed in and she’s doing really well on it.

Newpeep · 10/10/2023 09:46

I have fed raw in the past to a previous dog as it suited her at the time but it is a hassle and I’m not convinced it’s any better than a good quality dry with natural treats added in.

Newpeep · 10/10/2023 10:08

I can’t edit my last post but I agree with Ing Genius in that the best food is the one that suits the dog at the time. There isn’t a one size fits all. I’ve known some dogs do amazingly well on very poor quality food and vice versa.

LoubylooLucy · 10/10/2023 11:27

That’s good to know as I feel a bit guilty about moving ddog onto a different food!

Don't. My last dog was on Chappie when she came to us as that was the only food she could tolerate. She stayed on it while she settled in then we changed her. We changed her numerous times in her 16 years with us as her needs changed as she grew and aged. No one size fits all.
