When is it OK to view puppies away from their home?

We’ve been looking for a particular breed of puppy, and some have just come up near us. The breeder says they have a shop with a pen (I assume it’s not a pet shop) and they could bring in the puppies and the parents. Can anyone tell me if this is a red flag or not?

A breeder has sold one of their 1 year old girls to you? A girl they could have impregnated many times to make money? 🤔

EachandEveryone · 01/12/2023 18:32

Does it matter? Im not used to dogs only cats 😃

Lots of breeders keep pups to see how they do in the show ring. If they don’t enjoy it or show well they’re rehomed. I know lots of super dogs that came to their owners that way.

Not all breeders are in it for the money.

Just coming back to this thread to say we now have a lovely little dog, one year old, who has been settling in with us. We took everyone’s advice and stayed away from the dodgy puppies and instead found a local breeder with an excellent reputation who was selling one of her dogs. She’s an absolute delight and has quickly become one of the family.

Congratulations on your addition to the family! Wise choice. We took a 5 month old puppy last year (his energy levels had exceeded the previous owners expectations). He settled in quickly and we skipped in on some of the mess new puppies create when young. Win win for everyone including the previous owners

It is common for breeders to keep back a puppy or two from a litter to see how they develop and then sell them later if they decide not to keep them after all.

I got my dog when he was 10 months old the breeder kept two male dogs he’d bred with a view to keeping and showing the better one and standing it as a stud dog and selling the other. My dog was well socialised he’d been shown so was happy travelling in a car good around other dogs being handled by strangers he was house trained walked beautifully on his lead etc. He’s an excellent example of the breed came from a dedicated to the breed breeder but just not quite good enough to win at top level. I would happily do it again in fact I would rather do this than get a puppy.

What an odd assumption.

Lots of breeders keep a puppy or two back with the aim to show - if the puppy doesn't quite "make the grade" as such, they then sell them as family pets.

A friend has a lovely dog rehomed from a breeder as she kept two to choose from, and this one was too lively to enjoy showing so friend took her to be an agility and sports dog which is much more suited to her temperament. It’s a great way to get an older dog as like you say to show a dog or do anything with them they need a huge amount of input, care and attention, more so than your average pet puppy so they’ve done a lot of the hard work 🙂

ErrolTheDragon · 02/12/2023 11:58

We got our last dog from his breeder at 10 months too - his sire had won best of breed at Crufts a couple of times so they'd had high hopes for him but he wasn't quite up to those standards. But he had a wonderful temperament and lived to over 16. And was housetrained and well socialised! This can be a really great way of getting a dog if you are happy to miss the puppy stage. Well done OP!Smile

Oh, and OP, I think the customary repayment for good advice on this board is a photo ..,Grin

”if you are happy to miss the puppy stage”
@ErrolTheDragon reading on here the unbelievably high level of angst around the “puppy stage” (I’ve been round dogs all my like and have never heard the term “puppy blues” till I came on here) perhaps more people should get an adolescent dog from reputable breeder.

We’re just over a year in with our first baby puppy after older rescues and it’s not something I’d do again unless it was the only way. Ours is turning into a fabulous little dog but it’s been relentless and we’ve got a way to go yet.

We only did it after applying for over two years for rescues with no success (I’m a trainer!) because we have a cat.

Give me an adolescent or young adult over a puppy any day!

@PuppyAdvice. Errol is correct, you appear to have forgotten to pay the photo tax! Wink

Dogs often come into season once a year (sometimes twice depending on breed) and often don’t have their first until older than a year old.

There is absolutely no way this dog has been “impregnated” many times - it’s highly unlikely she has even been impregnated once.

It is a good idea to have a basic understanding of biology before posting silly comments like this.
