Thought I’d start a new thread as the old one is at its limit, for new and older pups.

please come and share your tales of success, woes, concerns and questions, and of course, photographs.

He’s had a sleep and been out again. He’s not eaten much, but assume that’s due to all the change and excitement.

Lougle · 16/10/2023 20:53

He has big ears to grow into ❤️

Mine is also a fox red lab, and she is definitely obedient and clever. We had a lovely day, she just snoozed at my feet, a lot of toilet breaks but no accidents. At lunch time we did some training, she’s definitely got Sit sorted, so we did ‘come with me’, and she got pretty good at that, and ‘gentle’ which isn’t so much fun. We’ve also got her to sit on a towel immediately when she comes in from the garden to wipe her paws, which seems to be working as well.

Awwwww...I miss our baby fox red, now he's a gallumphing great year old brute!

Lougle · 16/10/2023 22:32

So pretty. I love the white blaze on her chest. Hazel has about 20 white hairs down her chest. You have to stare to see them, but they're there. I wonder if the area will grow in time.

FoxRedPuppy · 17/10/2023 10:23

First night seemed ok. He went to sleep in his crate, I slept on sofa. He work once at 5am and went to toilet. He did seem to want to run around and play a bit, but finally got him back in crate for a bit more sleep.

He's eaten a tiny bit of his breakfast, but also had some cheese cubes while getting used to his collar.

He's asleep again. He loves his crate and seems to take himself to there to sleep which is ace.

Lougle · 17/10/2023 10:37

That's great @FoxRedPuppy . What are you feeding him?

FoxRedPuppy · 17/10/2023 11:01

Breeder gave use Royal Canin starter food (tiny bits) to mix with water for few days, then Royal Canin puppy.

We've had a few nights of sleeping through the night, so my next mission is to get out of the room. Gardendog will be crated in the same room but that seems no comfort to her! She is still getting very upset when I leave the room during the day. I'm hoping it's still normal new puppy stuff and not the beginnings of separation anxiety. I'm going to have another go at having her in the car with gardendog. Fingers crossed... I spend so much time in the car. Not being able to leave her home alone or put her in the car would be a disaster!

Thanks for the tip, I took out a policy with Waggle in the end.

Gardendog and gardenpup are getting on really well now and playing a lot, she's learning from her and also happier to stray further from me when she's following gardendog, so that's good!

What are people doing about trimming claws? I gave up with gardendog because she hated it, but also the cut edge of her claws were like razor blades after she'd had them trimmed. I've got a lovely scar on my leg to prove it! I think gardenpup will be happier to have her claws trimmed because she's much less hand-shy... but I'm not keen to have a mini wolverine running about

@BleakGarden we've been trimming claws once per week to get her used to it. Just a nibble off the end.

BleakGarden · 17/10/2023 15:05

Thanks @Lougle I'll give it a go!

We had success in the car, just a short trip around the block but it feels like a big win!

tizwozliz · 17/10/2023 15:16

Grace is on her 4th trip away and not yet 7 months old! Spoilt pup. This time in a campervan round Scotland which both pups have settled with straight away. Mostly a star but her loose lead walking requires a lot more practice.

Looking into seeing if I can teach the girls to file their claws. Grace has no length to hers but they're super sharp. Older one has never had hers cut.

Oh beautiful picture @tizwozliz!

Car travel needs some work for us. She whines.

tizwozliz · 17/10/2023 16:40

Grace whined a little at the start of journeys to start with, but she was fine as soon as she was big enough to go in the boot. Now she'll attempt to get in the car at any opportunity.

BleakGarden · 17/10/2023 16:47

lovely photo @tizwozliz! I would love to do a camper van trip around Scotland with the dogs at some point... kids permitting.

We had a little bit of whining in the car earlier but nothing major. I think it helped that she could see out the back window, and gardendog was on the other side of the divider looking calm. Better than the full on howling we had last time!

Sunrisemouse · 17/10/2023 17:34

I am usually a lurker but our Welsh Sheepdog puppy is now around 5 months and is soo much better than the early days. Toilet training is pretty much sorted but we do still let her out every few hours just in case.
Biting us has ceased, she uses her chews and toys as well as my secret weapon of cows hooves. She is still teething but making the right choices with what to chew in the main.
Recall and training going really well. We are starting hooper's at the end of the week.
She chills well at home, in fact today she has spent most of the day snoozing around her lunch time walk, with a few minutes of training spread out a few times.
Just waiting for it to all go out the window. Her she is in her favourite snoozing position

How is everyone?

We’re doing pretty well. No accident inside since Monday. I feel like I should be doing more training, it he sleeps so much there doesn’t seem time! We’ve been trying ‘sit’ with him with middling success!

His poo was a bit loose today and wonder if it’s from treats? We are using hot dog sausage and cheese (He’s not that bothered by cheese). He hasn’t eaten much of his breakfast or lunch today.

i scatttered some kibble and he ate a bit of that. Bit worried about his lack of eating. But otherwise seems happy in himself.

Lougle · 18/10/2023 15:51

Brilliant about the wees and poos @FoxRedPuppy . Some people find that if they give lots of high value treats for training, the puppy finds their normal meals a bit 'meh'. We have been following Kate Olsen of 'My Service Dog and Me' and she says that you should never feed high value treats at home, because then you have nothing of a higher value to offer in more difficult/more distracting places. Hazel has only ever tasted kibble, so far.

Lougle · 18/10/2023 15:53

We went to Costa coffee (sitting outside) today and Hazel did very well.

Pineapplemonkey · 18/10/2023 17:29

So Pineapplepup is still, despite being regularly taken outside, decided that toileting in my living room is preferable 😡
Basically if it's raining, she won't 'go' outside, even after 15 mins of being out in the rain, the minute she comes back inside, she will wee/poo on the carpet. I am soooo frustrated with her, my patience is wearing really thin. Is getting puppy pads a cop out? Will I be discouraging her from even trying to go outside?

With that and the constant biting, feel like I'm going out of my mind.

She's really sweet when she's asleep though, that is currently my favourite bit about her!

FoxRedPuppy · 18/10/2023 17:37

If I take fox pup out and he doesn’t go, I bring him back and then look for signs. I give a treat and loads of praise for going outside.

Has she got somewhere absorbent to go outside? Do you have the cleaning spray that blocks the smell so they don’t wee in same place?

I’m on the Dog Traing advice and support Facebook group and their guides are really good.

Pineapplemonkey · 18/10/2023 17:56

She has a penned off area and a choice of patio and gravel to go on. It's just because it's so wet and rainy out which I can't do anything about, it's torrential out there. When it was warm and sunshiny she chose to avoid the grass in the garden anyway so I don't think she'd be any better on that. Earlier when we came back in, she ran as fast as she could into the living room and before I'd had time to take my shoes off and catch up with her, she'd peed on the carpet! I spray enzyme cleaner liberally wherever she goes so as to not encourage her back again
