New (rescue) puppy only peeing inside in crate HELP

Anyone got any suggestions? This puppy just does not want to wee or poo outside. Perhaps to do with his background (only ever been locked in crate and then the kennels) but how can I help him? Any advice appreciated

Get rid of the crate. It’s probably re traumatised after being rescued from a crate then being used to kennels. It’s reverted back to how it had to behave when it was originally kept in one.

Put the crate outside and make it the "loo" for now
Cardboard box for bed and make a barricaded area around it if you need a "crate " area

Once you are past 13 weeks? Rewards and fuss for anything outside the crate (and outside) until you can take away the crate outside

Get rid of the crate.

Thanks, I know people have v v mixed views on crates and don't particularly want to debate that. Thanks for the advice though x

People are telling you to get rid of the crate because of the dogs past, not because they hate crates.

Can you put the crate into a puppy pen with the door open.

Let the dog get used to moving out of their sleeping area to toilet.

Over time as the dog relaxes in your home you will then be able to encourage them outside to wee and poo. Hopefully in a few days.

This is when I would use a puppy pad in the pen area to encourage weeing, you can then move the pad nearer and nearer to the door and put one outside to encourage the dog to wee outside.

If the dog has been crated in resuce then it may be just as traumatic to totally remove the crate but having the door open gives the dog choices onto what makes them feel comfortable.

Good Luck

How long have you had him?

You just need to pop a lead on, take him outside every 30mins or after sleeps and food and reward excitedly when he goes. Everyone has their own ideas but imo a lead for toileting very quickly teaches them they are toileting and not playing.

He's used to going in a kennel so you just need to start housetraining and ignore any crate and indoor accidents.

Just LOADS of praise when they go to the toilet outside. Don't take the crate away, our dogs are crated and it's a great safe space for them. It'll take a lot of standing outside but it'll come in time

Thanks @InIngGenius that's useful advice, that's pretty much what we did last night and it was a lot better. I would say 80% of poo and wee was on the pad. I also read so much about puppy pads and their pros and cons and I did not want to use them but I felt that he would benefit from them ... my only worry now is of course weaning him off them. I am still taking him outside every 30 minutes but as yes nothing at all outside! I am actually wondering about taking a soiled pad outside just so he starts to understand the message I'm trying to get across 🤦🏻‍♀️

@Janiie yes I have been taking him on the lead but he is just glued to me so try to walk around a bit to encourage him. So far done nothing at all outside, hoping I see progress soon as starting to feel a bit like what on earth have we done 🙈😥

Aw it is hard work, takes so much patience and persistentence. Wandering about in the wind and cold then they wee as soon as they go inside 🙈 but then just get it and the days of mopping and spraying become a thing of the past!

It is tricky when they've been in kennels but the penny does eventually drop. Good luck.

As far as I know rescue puppies are often used to weeing on a pad, I guess as there often isn't a person with enough free time to take every puppy out every 30 minutes. I had a rescue puppy and she weed on our small rugs at first, so I did use puppy pads, but tbh just spending loads of time in the garden broke the habit pretty quickly (I donated most of the giant pack of puppy pads we bought to the rescue in the end). Good luck.
