Dog grumpy when walked too much

Anyone else's dog ridiculously grumpy when they've had too much exercise? My 5 year old spaniel generally gets an hour a day, but she's been with friends and had about 3 hours of walks a day.
She's so tired now she has no patience with the other dogs. If they even sniff her she's snappy with them.
She also gets grumpy when you try to move her off the sofa or put her out for a wee.
I know she's not in pain as she's been like it since a tiny pup, but my god she's grumbly when she's tired!

She quite possibly is in pain. Have you had her checked for both patellar and hip problems? Is she a good weight?

A 5 year old spaniel should be able to walk all day.

I agree with the pp. It doesn't sound normal for a fairly young spaniel.

We have a Springer and after a particularly long or active walk she's certainly tired and can fall deeply asleep for a good couple of hours. But if you called her name she'd wake from her sleep and bound towards you.

My pup is a real grumpy twonk when he is over tired! Just like a toddler when they need a nap but won’t settle

Spottywombat · 02/10/2023 19:56

Luxating patella?

I wish I'd realised my terrier was in pain sooner.

margotrose · 02/10/2023 20:21

I wouldn't rule out pain.

Please get her checked by the vet.

IngGenius · 02/10/2023 21:03

Agree to check out pain. This is not normal behaviour for a 5 year old spaniel. Is she a healthy weight?

yohyohy · 02/10/2023 21:32

Yeah she's a skinny Minnie. People always comment that she's underweight but vet says she's perfect and people are just used to seeing fat dogs. She's kennel club registered and parents were hip, knee and eye checked and all fine.
She will keep going all day, if I called her for a walk now then she'd jump up. But when she's tired she is so flipping moody!

Please get her checked. It could be nothing but you don't want to leave your dog in pain if it's avoidable.

needtonamechangeagain · 03/10/2023 04:39

So are you going to take her to the vets?

FiveShelties · 03/10/2023 04:55

How do you know she is not in pain?

yohyohy · 03/10/2023 06:12

Yes she has her vaccinations next week so I'll ask them then.

It would be worth asking for a pain trial. It’s cheap and can tell you if there is pain then that can be investigated. Health tests of the parents are a good start but they can still develop issues as genetics are a contributory factor - other things are in play.

Whu · 03/10/2023 07:31

While her parents being tested is a good start but absolutely does not rule out some injury or pain for your dog.

Also, a trigger for pain in dogs is doing x amount all weekend and then doing three times more at the weekend. Much better to keep walks of a similar length and to build up gradually.

We had a cocker whose parents were hip, knee and anything that could be checked. He was the only one in his litter of 5 to have joint problems - both hips, both elbows. Get him checked, some dogs are just unlucky despite everything being done right.

Em just because the parents are hip & knee scored it doesn't mean that your dog is ok? I don't think it sounds right & I would be taking her to the vet. Dogs, particularly spaniels, don't show pain in the way we do. This is her saying she's unhappy for some reason.

IngGenius · 04/10/2023 11:51

I would also ask for a blood test.
