Dog ate raisins, going out of my mind

Wristfolds · 30/09/2023 12:22

my spaniel ate a snack size box of raisins, possibly overnight. I noticed the empty box on the rug and took her in immediately this morning.

injection didn’t bring anything up, just bile. They’re keeping her in for bloods and obs over the next 3 days.

im absolutely devastated. Please any idea of the likelihoods either way? She’s about 18kg.

We don’t usually have them in the house at all, my toddler was given some at a play date and didn’t finish them so I put them in my bag and forgot about them and left the bag overnight where she got them. I feel so incredibly guilty and worried

Ahh op I'm sorry this has happened. From what I've read/heard (when my dog ate a grape once) there's no real danger or safe amount it depends on the actual dog, which I found strangely reassuring as apparently SOME dogs can eat a fair amount and be fine (largely).

Did the vet give activated charcoal? Recall that helps with absorbing any toxins and iv fluids and yes just obs and bloods over the next few days.

I'm sure your pooch will be fine op but I know you must be so worried xx

justanotherlaura · 30/09/2023 12:34

I've heard that too, some dogs can eat one raisin and die and others can eat them all their life and be fine. We didn't know about grapes being bad and used to bounce them off the floor and our dog used to hunt them and then gobble them up. I'd never do it with our current dog now we know though!

You did the right thing getting them to the vets right away, hopefully it's a lot of worry for nothing!

NoSquirrels · 30/09/2023 12:34

When my dog ate raisins, my vet told me that it’s just a small percentage of dogs who are negatively affected, but they make them all vomit because they have no way of knowing which dogs will be fine, and which ones won’t. They told me that weight/how many she ate won’t affect it either way, really, not like for chocolate or other toxins - either she’s one of the dogs who react badly or she isn’t. The odds are on your side that she’ll come through unaffected, but no one can give you any certainty. Your vets sound like they’re doing all the right things by having her in and closely monitored.

I’m so sorry, what a worry! Sending you good thoughts for positive non-toxic outcome. Flowers

Wristfolds · 30/09/2023 12:34

I think I’ve killed my dog and I’m going to have to tell my kids. And I feel awful she’s there alone at the vets now.

She had an emetic injection and charcoal but just brought up bile. She seemed fine but apparently it will take 24h to be apparent.

Shes 8 and has been there for me when my mum died and helped me so much and I’ve just let everyone down

Oh I'm so sorry but to put your mind at rest, it's actually very very rare for a dog to react to raisins.

CaptainMyCaptain · 30/09/2023 12:37

When I was a child our dachshund ate half a Dundee cake with no ill effect. I hope your dog is OK.

Bookish88 · 30/09/2023 12:37

I know it's hard OP, but you're catastrophising right now. It was an accident and she's in the best place. No point beating yourself up, and the odds are very much still in your favour that she'll be absolutely fine.

NoSquirrels · 30/09/2023 12:37

You haven’t killed her. It’s really not your fault. Try to stay positive- she’s getting great care and the vets will react immediately if they need to.

VisaWoes · 30/09/2023 12:37

My dog ate an entire fruit loaf and never went to the vet. Was never sick. She was fine. She’s a 12kg spaniel. I think because you’ve gone to the vet quickly it’ll be fine.

VeridicalVagabond · 30/09/2023 12:39

She'll most likely be fine OP, try not to worry. My Borzoi ate a whole flaming bag of raisins when she was younger and the pantry door got left ajar and she was alright. A negative reaction is very rare! I understand how worried you are though, I was frantic, but she's in the best hands she possibly could be.

Wristfolds · 30/09/2023 12:41

I’m sorry I am freaking out. My husbands away so I had to get her to the vet with a toddler in tow solo and I held it together til then but now I’ve got home and lo is asleep I have fallen apart a bit.

My old dog was 15 and had to stay over at the same vets and died of renal failure so I probably am having a bit of an emotional wobble. We went back to say goodbye and the last time I was in the back was when she was being put down

Wristfolds · 30/09/2023 12:43

Thankyou. The vet did say most dogs recover but obviously kept caveating that there were no guarantees and they just don’t know why some dogs react

My husband and I are going through a rough patch and the first thing he said was why did you leave raisins near her :(

margotrose · 30/09/2023 13:01

The likelihood is that she'll be absolutely fine. As PP said, the reason vets make every dog sick is because they have no way of knowing which ones will be negatively affected.

Your DH shouldn't be blaming you. I don't know any dog owner who hasn't had their dog eat/destroy something it shouldn't - it happens to the best of us!

WomanFromTheNorth · 30/09/2023 13:04

My dog used to eat fruitcake all the time. I'm sure your dog will be fine.

uncomfortablydumb53 · 30/09/2023 13:04

Oh I'm sorry Don't feel guilty these things happen
You got ddog to the vets asap, so there's a good chance the charcoal will have absorbed the toxins
At 18kg hopefully there weren't enough raisins to do any damage to the kidneys anyway
Friends lab ate grapes with no effects
I have a Westie who tries to share everything so I do understand what a worry it is
Thinking of you

NoSquirrels · 30/09/2023 13:04

Sending you a big hug, OP.

I expect your DH just reacted in the moment - I’m sorry to say I might say something like that if I was the one being told by my DP, not really because I’d blame him particularly once I understood how it happened, just because it’s a first shock reaction. Be kind to yourself.

DearTheodosiaa · 30/09/2023 13:10

My childhood dog's favourite food was hot cross buns! He lived to the grand old age of 14

NonMiDispiace · 30/09/2023 13:13

You haven’t killed your dog, she’s at the vets and will probably be fine.
I’ve had a dog swipe and eat a whole fruit cake and another used to eat grapes straight off the vine. Years ago we didn’t know that these could have adverse effects, similarly with chocolate. You used to be able to buy dog chocolate drops! One dog ate Christmas tree chocolates off the tree, she pooped foil for days.

This. It's very rare and chances are she will be fine. Try to keep busy and treat it a few chunks of time at a time. Sending love
My dog ate a whole slice of simnel cake and had the whole throw up then monitor thing and my vet was very blasé as the risk of them being the one who has a bad reaction is small. Hang in there

Frequency · 30/09/2023 13:20

Oh OP ((((hugs))))

Only a tiny % of dogs who eat raisins/grapes are affected. They are not sure if it is due to something with dogs or something with the fruit. There is every chance your dog will be fine.

If it makes you feel better my dog is part beagle and has eaten all kinds of shit. It took me a long time to explain to the pet poison people that no, he did not sniff or lick the wallpaper paste, he stuck his entire head in the paste bucket and started slurping hungrily.

DD once left a certain ingredient for her "special" brownies in the kitchen bin. Just the raw plant, not anything else. Again, it took me a while to explain that no, he did not eat the brownies, he only ate the raw green stuff. He forgot how to walk for a few hours but was fine. Apparently, it is the chocolate and sweeteners in edibles you need to worry although the vet had never heard of a dog eating just the leaves.

WhippetOfMassDestruction · 30/09/2023 13:38

Fingers crossed for you. It's really good that you knew she had eaten them and took her to the vet straight away so she has the best possible chance.

If it makes you feel better my MIL used to give her dog muesli for breakfast (yes, complete with raisins in) whenever they ran out of dog food, which seemed to be quite often 🙄 Anyway, the dog was always fine and hopefully she will never do it again now she's been told the dangers.

Good luck, try to stay busy xxxx

Timeforchangeithink · 30/09/2023 13:43

Until recently I thought it was only chocolate dogs couldn't get. I've fed my dogs anything and everything for the last 40 years and nine have come to harm. Luck possibly and not advising to do this!

AtomHeartMotherOfGod · 30/09/2023 13:48

In My Family etc, Gerald Durrell said his dog, Roger, absolutely loved grapes. I hope yours will be OK 🙂

Eloisedublin123 · 30/09/2023 13:52

My hound ate the same amount, and didn’t vomit anything up either, and was fine

Yes, we did not know about the raisin/grape thing when I was growing up. All our dogs ate them, including our outrageously naughty spaniel who once stole the Christmas cake, and they were fine.
