Hi I have just got a 12 week old cavapoo pup I have him 5 days and he is really struggling to poo. He will strain to push out 1 tiny piece and this will dangle by a thin piece of hair/muscus(I don't know what it's dangling by but looks stringie) then the rest seems to be getting caught and is just pushed out enough that you can see it and if he sits down on anything will leave a poo mark.
What can I do to help him? I'm in the vet on Tuesday for vaccine and will ask them to clear his anal glands. (I haven't got the stomach to do it myself or knowhow).

He shouldn't need anal glands clearing at 12 weeks. I'd get him to vet today or at least call and ask for advice. Puppies health can deteriorate very quickly quickly.

Has he been like this the whole 5 days? I’d not wait til Tuesday to see a vet.

Check there isn't a tug of hair physically blocking the poo coming out (if he's leaving a mark when he sits, this is a possibility, but will be cleaner anyway).

Curly haired dogs can have matted hair anywhere, even over their bums, cut it short and see if it makes a difference. If not, you need to go to the vet. Do you know what the puppy was eating before you got them?

Anytime you get any new puppy, the very first thing to do is book a vet appointment within the first 2-4 days for a checkup. This is normally stipulated by the breeder, anyway, and is your chance to get a medical opinion on the health of the dog you acquired.

A dog this young that is visibly struggling to poo as if he has a blockage needs seeing asap. Do not delay until Tuesday. It may be nothing but it also may be something that can turn serious very quickly. Don't hold off over the weekend.

And I agree: a 12 week old pup should not need glands flushing - this is likely 'just' a secondary symptom of him not having a regular, decent bowel movement.

If he was, I suspect his glands would be fine.

Yes definitely take him to the vets.

When we got our dog as a puppy he had a similar issue in that he struggled sometimes and a bit would get stuck so we took him to the vet and they said he was fine but recommended switching from dry to wet food or a mixture of the 2 as he was just on dry at the time and that helped in our case. So that may be the case for your dog too but would still get him to the vets to be checked over to rule out anything more serious

He needs to be seen today. It could be stress. It could be diet. It could be a blockage.

StrongTea · 28/09/2023 09:26

Is he drinking ok?

ImaMumtoaboy · 28/09/2023 09:30

Great thanks for all the advise. I'll phone vet again. Tuesday was the earliest appointment I could get when I rang to book him in for his vaccine.
He is on dry food only and they gave us a bag of food that they were feeding him.
I noticed yesterday he was struggling but want sure if it was stress because he didn't want to be out in the rain but it happened then again this morning.

Agree - with small puppies you cannot be too careful.

I hope you get a vet appointment today. One thing to do anyhow is start adding a tablespoon or so of water to each dry feed. This will help soften stools.

margotrose · 28/09/2023 11:18

He needs to see a vet today - if he's not pooing properly that can be a sign of something quite serious.

ImaMumtoaboy · 29/09/2023 14:49

Hi. Vet said to give him cod liver oil with his food. Give him a bath and massage around his butter to stimulate it.
Thanks

Sorry OP! (am very glad it's nothing serious - phew!)

ImaMumtoaboy · 29/09/2023 15:13

Ha ha didn't notice that. Auto correct.
