Hi what do I need?

I've had dogs before, my family all have dogs and a lot work with them.

But I want to write a list and get some tips before I speak to them.

Thank you.

A crate is an absolute life saver for a new puppy!

Ostryga · 26/09/2023 06:55

Crate training as soon as they get home.
Buy a puppy carrier so you can take them out and about and get the used to busy roads, sudden noises, pubs, large groups of people while they’re snuggled up to you (you can do this before their vaccinations just never put them down)
Don't use puppy pads to toilet train, you confuse them, they don’t understand why it’s sometimes fine to pee in the house and sometimes not.
LOADS of chewy toys to redirect their snapping at something other than your arms and feet.
Start training at home from day one. Just little 5 minute bursts when they’re not having a mad half an hour.
You will probably get the puppy blues at some point and regret getting them and think you’ve ruined your life. Very normal! And it does pass as they get less insane.
Don’t forget when they hit the teenage phase they forget everything and are little shits. Also normal and they will come through it! Just keep up with training.

Torch and easy-to-put-on shoes for letting them outside in the middle of the night.

water and food bowl

collar and leads

pet insurance

worm/flea tablets - vets have health plans for this

puppy classes - popular ones get booked up early

registered at vets

anti- chew spray - bitter apple spray

spray for cleaning up after accidental wees

toys, chews etc

container to store food and treats in

treat bags for walks etc

puppy pads - we didn’t use these either

read or look at your tube videos for early training ideas - be warned there’s lots of different ones with conflicting advice. Ones we used included Mcann, kiko pup, etc

I agree, be prepared for puppy blues. Puppies are cute but are monsters. Also be prepared that they bite a lot, are full of energy, relentless, and you’ll be exhausted for a while.

Photographs - for us, of course!

Get the book Easy, Peasy, Puppy Squeezy which should get you through the first few months.
Don't use puppy pads or chewing spray.
Depending on the breed of the dog get booked in for proper breed appropriate training.

Lastqueenofscotland2 · 26/09/2023 10:29

a lot of patience and sense of humour helps!

BarrelOfOtters · 26/09/2023 10:41

You don't need to crate train. I'm not entirely sure of the point.

patience, and umbrella and a warm dressing gown for middle of the night wees.

Frozen tea towels for teething, frozen carrots, frozen yoghurt.....

BarrelOfOtters · 26/09/2023 10:42

Easy, Peasy, Puppy Squeezy is very good!

BarrelOfOtters · 26/09/2023 10:42

Let them off the lead as soon as you can, and start training recall while they are still finding you the most interesting thing in the world = and training sausages.

NeedHelp000 · 27/09/2023 06:18
