I just shouted at dog

I've just really shouted at my dog and I feel awful. Her barking at people passing the house has been awful today. She has an incredibly loud bark and it's driving me mad. I shouted really loudly and feel so bad. She's falling asleep on my knee now so I know she's fine but it's completely unproductive and just horrible to shout at a completely innocent animal. How do I desensitise her to not need to defend the house?

This is invaluable advice about how to break the habit

What will your answer be though when our neighbours reach the end of their tethers and knock on your door ?

I like my dog more than I like you won't cut it ?

Lots of ,my neighbours have dogs and yes they bark , it is a fact of life . They bark to alert to "Hey someone is outside MY House"

But there is one that does my head in. And I am this close to shouting Shut your f**king dog up or knocking on their door like a thing possessed .
Seriously does my head in and I shouldn't have to listen.

your neighbours .

You need to teach a "speak" command (look up Kiko pup on YouTube for this). Once your dog can "speak" on command, you teach a "quiet" command. While you're teaching speak distract her the very second it looks like she might bark with a treat or a game.

Don't worry about the shouting. Dogs don't understand it the way we do. As far as your dog was concerned you were joining in with her. She would have thought it was great fun!

I yelled at my dog in public the other day.

He was on his extender lead and managed to wrap it around my legs without me noticing, so when I pressed the button to wind it in, I almost went face first and ate some pavement.

Course it was the dogs fault.. not mine.. the bloody idiot..

He just looked at me as if I was yelling crumpet money shithouse gorilla Facebook YouTube BBC.
Had a treat and went off trying to wrap me up again.

Don't feel bad OP.

Try searching for Will Atherton on YouTube, he seems pretty good. :)

Can you use baby gates to keep your dog in back part of the house at times when you can't quickly attend to her (e.g. while you work)?

My answer will be to tell them everything that I've done (that hasn't worked) to try to stop this, all the training I've done and the trainers I've worked with. I've not sat back and allowed it.

If you can't train her out of it, can you move her to another room while you are not able to supervise? That will limit the issue for you when you are working and your neighbours if they are close enough to hear.

@Yesnomaybeok Invest in a Relax O Pet. My ddog is a yapper at times and when I have to leave her, I put on the Relax O Pet and it sends her in to a deep sleep.

It can be used as a calming distraction too. You can set it to only go off when the dog starts barking. When the dog barks, it will activate and emit calming waves. You do have to do a small amount of training with it but it’s easy. I bought it as a last resort as I thought it might be a gimmick, but I wouldn’t be without it now. It might not work for everyone, but it has helped our dog. There are different versions, I have the pro.

It does have a weirdly relaxing effect on DH too 😁.

My mother in law had a similar problem. She's nearly 80. She bought a buzz collar (NOT a shock collar) so when he barked she buzzed him. That didn't cause pain but broke his concentration on the barking. She then told him he was a good boy and gave him a treat. It took a few weeks but it worked x

I know it sounds counter intuitive but I thank mine, and say "it's fine", "well done" "good girl". I saw on one of the dog training TV programmes to do this. Works for me. They are apparently doing it to prove they are keeping you safe, and as pack leader if you show that you have the situation under control, they can relax. Thought it was a bit mad but genuinely worked for me.
