I have a 5 year old Jack Russell, I always intended to get her spayed but haven’t yet 🫣 please don’t judge, she’s never had puppies, this wasn’t ever on the agenda.

shes currently experiencing a phantom pregnancy after visiting the vets yesterday, we already knew this but wanted it confirm.

going to ring up when the phantom has ended to book in for a spay

i know I can ask the vet this, but it won’t be yet, but how to prepare for post spay time period? I’m a SAHP/carer so I’m around most of the time so will be fully home for her recovery.

is it worth buying a second hand stair gate to prevent her going upstairs?

will she bleed a lot?

tia

It depends how she’s having it done really. They offer keyhole surgery now, which is more expensive but recovery is much quicker. With open surgery, which our dog had, we kept her quiet for a few days, and she needed quite a lot of pain relief. In fact we had to take her back to the vets as she was crying with pain. She didn’t bleed at all. She had to wear a cone over her head to stop her biting the stitches.

All of the above. But if they offer you a sort of baby grow vs a cone. Go for the cone. We tried the baby grow thing and our DDog ended up with a reaction to the anaesthetic and pain relief which caused liquid diarrhea. Couldn't undo the poppers quick enough!

My pup was spayed at 11 months, she's doesn't walk up and downstairs by herself because I've always carried her so that wasn't an issue.

I didn't walk her for a few days post spay and then only 10-15min on lead walks a couple of times a day for a week.

She was totally wiped out the day she came home, she didn't even have a wee or poo until the next morning. She would just stand like a statue and not move if I took her onto the garden.

No jumping on furniture.

I had to remove her toys for a week because she throws them about and chases after them.

Mine wore a surgery suit rather than a cone

She ended up getting a poorly tummy from the pain med/anti inflammatory so had to be switched to liquid paracetamol.

Your dog shouldn't bleed at all post spay, mine had internal stitches so there was barely anything to see on the outside. Honestly a week or two of managing physical exercise and inconvenience is far better than putting up with seasons for you and your dog. I'm so glad I got mine done after her first season. I don't have to worry about Pyometra, bleeding everywhere, phantom pregnancies or restricting her walks when in season.

Freeze some licky mats, kongs or give her a yak chew to keep her occupied.

Recently had my male done. I know the operation is more involved with the ladies, but here’s my words of wisdom.

We basically gave up 48 hours to stay with him. The first night he cried a lot and wanted to be with dh or myself. He wouldn’t sleep in his crate, so slept on the sofa for two nights. We slept downstairs with him. He was very subdued and quiet during this time.

Afterthat, he gradually got better and became his normal self, although still a little quiet for a few days. We took him on short walks.

We put him a body suit. We got one from Amazon, but that was a little loose around his stomach. We got a Buster one from the vet which fitted better and wasmore snug. However, it was useful to have two as he wee’d a couple of times so it was useful to change them over.

i m know girls take longer to recover.

I've just had my sighthound done, had to use the bodysuit rather than the cone because she slipped it but we knew this and were prepared!

Recovery has been fine, wound has been fine, she hasn't been interested in licking the site.

But, almost 2 weeks on and she is needing a run! Nothing is taking the edge off her need to go wild. I'm doing brain work and everything I can think of, I work from home and am around but I can not wait for the stitches to come out.

The surgery and recovery was fine though, it was the pent up frustration which us causing more issues.
