Which breed should I choose?

Thinking of getting a 2nd dog. I have a 3 year old Beagle already, but would be looking at a less crazy “active” breed if possible.

Anyone with a Beagle knows the struggle 😂 Luckily she’s becoming quite the lazy daisy as she gets older but wow those puppy years!!!

I WFH, and am an introvert anyway so I’d be with the dog nearly 24/7. I have a dog walker for times where I’m too busy to get out (rarely). I’d ideally want a small/medium dog, and have no worries about level of grooming or shedding. Personality wise, I’d ideally want a breed that is likely to be good with kids, but that’s the only requirement really.

Any ideas?

Note: I’ve already considered adopting from a shelter, but there’s no available dogs in my area. Which is absolutely wonderful to know they’ve all got homes 😭❤️

If you can cope with a beagle, you can probably cope with a terrier!

Have a look at the smaller (not toy) ones such as Border, Norfolk, Norwich or Cairns, or a bit bigger a Wheaten.

Agree!
When it comes to small dogs, non shedding and good with children, border and cairn terriers always jump to my mind.
Never met a bad one, adorable little dogs.

Aw a neighbor of my grandmother’s had a Cairn, and she was the sweetest little thing! Our family growing up had a Westie, and he was also one of the sweetest dogs (to me - he was a grump to everyone else 😂😂)

A terrier or terrier mix might be a good choice to look into! Sturdy, loyal, usually not too high a maintenance. Thanks for the recommendation!

Parsons Jack Russel. Mine is very sweet. He’s still a handful at a year old but very lovely and pleased to meet other dogs and people.

We had a border terrier who was a fabulous family dog - he ran like a little teddy bear, was always up for playing with the kids, easy to transport around, cheerful and friendly. He was very barky, though, and used to patrol the garden fence, chasing off potential intruders like birds, leaves, the wind, etc, and that would set off our other dog. After his demise, our neighbours thought both dogs had died as the difference in volume was so dramatic. He was quite 'busy', like most terriers, so you might find terrier energy re-energises your beagle just at the point where you think she's quietened down?

For a quieter life it might be worth looking at breeds that don't have that 'job' drive - maybe a companion breed like a shih tzu?

I was also going to suggest a border terrier! Lovely, funny dogs with loads of personality!

RunningFromInsanity · 13/09/2023 20:47

You want a less active dog then not a border terrier!

ShihTzu? Lhasa Apso? (You don’t have to have a fussy show haircut, you can just have them plain short haired)
Cavalier?

Another beagle owner here Grin

Do you want a dog that will play "bitey face" with her and keep her amused, or do you want one that will attempt to calm her down a bit?

A bit of both really. My entire family have dogs and I see them frequently, so she plays bitey face with them quite often (parents have a golden who is just as insane 🙈)

Also so happy to know that bitey face is a common beagle thing 😂😂😂

Mine adores a game of bitey face - it's his absolutely favourite thing ever 😂

He even managed to train our old cat to play with him - unfortunately she passed away and our remaining two are less than impressed with his efforts 🙈

His best friends are cocker spaniels, labradors and a cockapoo - unfortunately they're all just as insane as he is!

I’ve got a year old Border bitch and she’s high energy. She gets an hour offlead a day (more at weekend) but she’s quite easy to tire out with brainwork and loves learning if you make it fun. She does two training classes a week (agility and obedience) and I train her or play games most days. Between those times she is happy to snooze or play or potter. She has the potential to be barky but we’ve worked hard on her not needing to be a guard dog and it’s reduced massively. She’s still quite puppy (biting, mouthing, being a pain to the cat) but I know they don’t tend to grow up until well into adulthood.

WiltingWallfower · 14/09/2023 22:45

Norwich/Norfolk? Of the two Norfolks are my favourite, but harder to come by. Lovely dogs, terriers but sweet natured and without as much sass as lots of terrier breeds.

I wouldn’t get a Wheaten if you want less crazy/active, mine was unusually steady for a Wheaten, but still quite bonkers.

I have an English Toy Terrier - short coat, hardly any shedding, very loving and cuddly and bright as a button, so easy to train (with the caveat that they are still terriers, so very positive motivational training only). There are lots in homes with children (my dc are all over mid-teen age now, but I know of a few that live happily with younger children). They have plenty of energy for fun, love to play and are a sight to behold when running full pelt, but also love nothing better than being under a blanket (or several) snuggled up against or even better - on top of their person. Downside is that they can be a bit barky, but mine has been easy to teach an alternative behaviour.

yellowduckling1 · 14/09/2023 22:50

Shi tzu clipped short, easy to look after, perfect cuddle companion. Mine LOVES kids. She actively seeks them out 🙈

Never heard of this breed... beagle crossed with cavalier?

Fleetheart · 16/09/2023 16:46

yes a beaglier is beagle cavalier cross

YoDood · 16/09/2023 19:24

Another massive thumbs up for a border terrier. Mine is more biddable than a beagle, playful with other dogs and people and loves running but is very capable of being quiet at home. Absolutely adores her family, is so good natured and full of character. Everyone loves her (and it’s mutual).

Pippetypoppity · 20/04/2024 13:05

I’m in exactly the same position. My beagle is 4. What did you choose after all? Also, how did you stop beagle mobbing the puppy and overwhelming it. We want a companion for ours too you see.
