How to find a regular evening dog-sitter?

This seems like one of these things people just know about, but I'm going round in circles on Google... help me out please!

So we're having a home check today, and potentially meeting the dog this weekend to see if we're a good match for adopting. However, we're starting a language class in a few weeks which means we'll both be out the house for about 3 hours every evening. I'm sure we could leave many adult dogs alone for 3 hours if they've had a meal and a walk, but with a rescue I'd rather someone was with her, just to be sure.

"Trusted Housesitters" seems to be for whole days, or overnight, or holidays at a time, but I can't access the site without setting up an account (which I don't want to do just yet as we may not match with this dog..!). Is there an option for a regular "Thursday evenings for a year" sort of situation?

Or should I be looking somewhere else to get someone in on such a regular basis? Dog walker? We just need an evening babysitter for the dog, basically!

Just wanted to say it’s not worth signing up for TrustedHousitters as you are right, it’s for people who will come and stay in your house for anything from a couple of days to months.

Maybe try and hook into the local babysitter group, obviously depends on how the dog will settle, and its temperament.

Insured ddog sitter to sit in the dog's own home? Bit ott?

It's not remotely over the top.

Aside from family and close friends, I wouldn't leave my dog with anyone who wasn't insured and first aid trained at the absolute minimum.

I should say the rescue is fine with the idea of us having a dog sitter for the class this soon so long as it's the same person (just spoke with them on the home cbeck), but I definitely hear you with the concerns about settling in and keeping things as low-key as we can.

I would take whatever the rescue says with a huge pinch of salt.

While they have their arbitrary rules about who to rehome to - no kids, must have a garden, must be neutered etc (to protect themselves and to look good) their job is just to get the rehoming done, ime they are pretty useless when it comes to any advice when you hit problems after taking ownership of the dog.

Much better to listen to experienced owners.

Oh and if you are getting someone to sit with a newly rescued dog I would make sure you have liability insurance just in case the dog does react in some way and causes an injury. It is usually part of good pet insurance, but think you can also buy separately quite cheaply.

Advert in local college for a teen happy to bring their homework every Thursday evening.

Puppy be fine alone for 3 hrs. This is why there is so many anxious dogs with behaviour problems.

For us, getting a dog meant committing to not doing this sort of social activity together for a while. Could you take turns doing the class?

Doone21 · 10/09/2023 20:05

If its not already crate trained look into this as a rescue dog will feel safer there than meeting yet another random set of new people. 3 hrs is nothing. It would probably like the peace and quiet.
Otherwise try local Facebook

Many people on Rover are insured and first aid trained FYI

Just wanted to pop back to say thanks all for the responses. The both of us being at the class together is non-negotiable, and it runs once a year until the summer. We've been on a waiting list for quite a while now, so it's just awkward timing but not impossible to manage, really. I appreciate all the advice!
