Annual parasite check

We subscribe to the healthy pet plan for our dogs and get regular reminders for flea and worm treatment. We got a text reminder but instead of being able to pick it up as usual have been told that under new legislation both dogs have to have an annual parasite check before they can give them to us. Both pets recently had their annual check and this is the first I’ve heard of this.Has anyone else had this or can point me towards the relevant legislation.

Our vet sent this out last week:

"Important Update

We now require 2 working days notice for all medication orders including flea & worm treatments.

This is following new guidance from the Royal College of Veterinary Surgeons (RCVS) whereby all prescriptions have to be authorised by an on-duty veterinary surgeons before the medication can be dispensed and then checked by two staff members.

Thank you for your cooperation & patience."

Ah, found it
https://www.rcvs.org.uk/setting-standards/advice-and-guidance/under-care-new-guidance/

"As now, before prescribing POM-Vs, you will have to carry out a clinical assessment. From 1 September, it is up to you to decide whether this clinical assessment needs to include a physical examination, in all but a number of circumstances (see point 4, below).
You must always perform a physical examination in the following circumstances:
where a notifiable disease is suspected
when prescribing controlled drugs (unless there are exceptional circumstances)
when prescribing antibiotics, antifungals, antiparasitics or antivirals (unless there are exceptional circumstances)*.

*NB The proximity of physical examination to prescribing will be slightly different depending on the species being treated (see FAQ 4 and FAQ 6).
It is your decision, once you have assessed the situation, whether or not to prescribe medicines remotely. To support you in using your professional judgement, we have set out a list of factors to consider when deciding whether a physical examination is necessary (see paragraph 6 of the new guidance, below)."

Cross post sorry!

Woolftown · 06/09/2023 15:58

Many thanks - thought it was odd that it hadn’t been mentioned before as their last check was earlier this summer.

Thanks for this. It would have made sense for our vets to have included this
in the scheduled checkups we had for both our dogs earlier this year. No wonder so many are finding it hard to comply.
