When to spay small dog

We have a small terrier pup who is 4 months old, and are trying to decide when best to get her spayed. I have done a lot of reading online and there seem to be pros and cons to waiting and not waiting so wanted people to share their experiences/opinions.
our vet suggested ASAP, the puppy training lady said to wait…
thanks in advance!

I have 2 young ish bitches and I had one spayed when she was about 13 months. She had an awful fake pregnancy after her first season and I didn't want that for her again. My other girl is now due her 2nd season so I have to wait 8 weeks after that to spay her. I wish I'd spayed her after her 1st but the opportunity never came.
My vet wouldn't spay until after 1st season but I have read that some vets say there's not need to wait.

My girl did change a little after being spayed in that she became a little nervy around male dogs but that was the only change I noticed.

I have two small terriers. I did a lot of reading and decided to let them both have 2 seasons then had them keyhole spayed - more expensive but well worth it. Far less removed and less risk of incontinence etc.

There's no need to delay for small terriers (there can be good reasons to wait for some larger breeds)

So either get her done before a first season would be expected, or a couple of months after it has happened.

We had our 2 rescue puppies spayed/neutered at 6 months on the advice of 2 vets in our family, one who did their operations.

Following. My breeder and vet both said wait until she has her first period. DH is not keen to get her sprayed due to the lack of good vet surgeon in where we live. They can't do any keyhole surgery.

I have a 12 month old terrier. We have chosen to wait until after her second season (which is any day now) to get her spayed. This will ensure she is through adolescence and fully mature. That is on the advice or our vet and also trainer friends. Our vet recommends after second or third season, depending on the dog.

You can go to any vet for keyhole. I just researched and went to best one who did keyhole within a reasonable distance

@ZoeyBartlett I live in one of the Overseas Territories. No vet can do keyhole.

@inneedofgooddogideas I was advised to let my Whippet have one season to make sure she was fully sexually mature- it guards against urinary incontinence.
she was sixteen months old when traditionally spayed
I did think about Keyhole surgery, but my vet said she prefers traditional spaying as laparoscopic spays haven’t been around long enough to be proven “ Better” than Traditional spays.
Our girl recovered fast- very neat scar that is invisible now
pic of it a day post surgery.

Pic post spay ( 2 days later)
