Dogs behaving (very) badly- Netflix

I appreciate I'm late to this show having only seen probably old episodes on Netflix recently but wondered what everyone thought?

I think Graeme is amazing and also seems very lovely , I've already learnt stuff but I'm wondering if there's bits of it they don't show or things he would normally say that have been edited out.

An episode I just watched was a woman living alone with mobility and serious health issues that had a cocker spaniel puppy (I mean what was she thinking ) - he was shadow chasing and obviously bored out of his mind and not getting enough exercise and stimulation, but this wasn't discussed it was more just here's how to manage/ stop the shadow chasing no mention of why he was doing it.
She'd actually been hospitalised by him knocking her over.
I just think it'd be good if there was a bit more real talk and he delved deeper

Maybe the format changes as the episodes get more recent 🤔

He is a horrendous trainer with no qualifications at all.

He usually blames the owners for all the dogs issues and give out some dodgy advice.

As you have noted there are major flaws in his methods.

21ZIGGY · 02/09/2023 21:53

No he's useless. I saw a collie light chaser episide and he just said ignore her and she'll stop. As someone who lives with a light chaser, that advice is dangerous

Carsarelife · 02/09/2023 21:56

I think he's fab and seems very calm and endearing.
Every episode I've watched he's done great with all different kinds of breeds

IngGenius · 02/09/2023 22:00

I remember a Great Dane where he told the owner just to jerk his lead to stop him being reactive to other dogs! Yep that will do it Confused

It did make me wonder on his sanity when he installed a camera in a mushroom ornament to stop a dog eating its poo......

Just show the dog who is boss Confused and if that does not work add a bit of pain and all will be solved is his moto

Goldflap · 02/09/2023 22:12

I'd like to see a bit more of the follow up as some times the owners sound a bit vague so I wonder.
Might be good to see some he doesn't instantly (or ever) fix too.

The Dog Academy on All 4 has a good line up of trainers so watch those instead if you can.

I find the twee format a little irritating as while need owner/dog backstory I'd rather they spent more time on the trainers interactions with owner & dog/s and cut the waffle.

Who are the The Dog Academy experts? Meet the canine specialists on Channel 4's new show

They certainly know their stuff!

I've never seen him do or say anything dodgy on any of the times I've seen him on TV and I've watched out specifically because of the bad rep he seems to get on MN especially. It's generally been the same distract and reward techniques others do on similar programmes. Maybe I've just not seen the 'right' episodes?

Newpeep · 03/09/2023 07:40

He labels everything as attention seeking. He doesn’t look at the dog or environment as a whole. He doesn’t address the root issues and he is basically a TV personality.

I have a very good, experienced and qualified trainer friend who picks up many of his ‘failures’.

The Dog Academy, whilst I dislike the sob story element, is a much better example of how to modify behaviour.

andrainwillmaketheflowersgrow · 03/09/2023 07:44

He's awful.

He also seems to think that pretty much everything is attention seeking and can be solved with an "ah ah!" and a "quick flick of the lead".

Newuser75 · 03/09/2023 07:50

As others have said his methods aren't always science based. And often negative and punishment based which is cruel and outdated.

I'd much rather watch other qualified trainers. To be honest I'm baffled how he got on tv.

It's the whole "English Gentleman" act I suppose - the tweed jackets, the ties, the waistcoats. He just comes across like he's playing the part of a dog trainer without actually knowing what one is Wink

Yes, you are probably right.

He's great 🐶

lavenderandlemon · 03/09/2023 10:21

God, he's awful. His solution to everything is to just yank them around by the collar. A lot of the problems on the show seem to be along the lines of, "we've tried nothing and we're all out of ideas!" so it looks like he's working miracles. Anything more serious, like light chasing, he doesn't have a clue.

andrainwillmaketheflowersgrow · 03/09/2023 10:50

He seems to have 5-6 different techniques that kind of work and just uses them at random until one of them appears to make a difference.

But he can't solve any serious issues - there have been several dogs on there with more severe behavioural problems and he's just clueless and clearly way out of his depth.

I remember an episode where a family had two dogs who were fighting to the point of drawing blood. He decided he'd successfully solved the problem because he managed to get both dogs sitting (on leads) in the same room for a few minutes by the end of the show.

The dogs, however, were clearly incredibly uncomfortable - whale eyes, ears pinned back and constantly on alert for any movement. It was horrible to see.
