Regurgitation

We have a 5m terrier puppy. She’s healthy, happy in herself and active, but we’re finding that she keeps regurgitating after her first morning feed. We split it into two feeds, one about 7am and the next about 8.30am but she will often just regurgitate after the second feed.

We were giving her about 30g kibble soaked in water each feed, and we’ve recently started trying a pouch of wet food each feed instead. The latter was better and we’ve had a few days without regurgitation but she did it again this morning.

We did take her to the vet when she first started doing it and the vet suggested a possible wheat intolerance and low motility so she now has a probiotic with her first feed and we’ve switched to wheat free food but she’s still regurgitating often.

We split her morning feed and her evening feed into two and she has about 50g kibble in water at lunch. She has training treats and the odd sprat but not a lot.

If anyone has any suggestions I’d be grateful! Thank you.

Sorry if I'm not reading it right - but have you always split her breakfast in two or did that only start happening because she was regurgitating?

We split it in two because of the regurgitation. Just to be clear, it’s only breakfast which is a problem. She eats all her other meals and they stay down!

I wonder if she's really hungry in the mornings and eating too quickly.

Have you tried giving her a small snack at bedtime and then a small breakfast?

Have you tried a slow feeder bowl? DD has to use one with her cocker puppy otherwise she just bolts her food and throws it all back up again.

She still has her on 4 small meals a day on advice from the vet.

I was going to suggest a slow feeder or activity ball thing to feed for breakfast. Just in case she is eating too quickly.

I’d suggest she was eating too quickly. I’ve got a terrier and morning meals were a struggle until fairly recently. She is 12 months now and normal. They’ve got very small stomachs. Mine used to be sick and would have obvious tummy ache.

Id also suggest a slow feeder. I use a lickimat bowl for one meal a day. I smear the bit of wet all over the bowl then put some dry in. It really slows them down.

We got her a slow feeding bowl and I put her wet food on her licky mat and spread it around. She did eat slower once she had these but she still regurgitates.

It just seems odd because it’s only this one feed (second breakfast) which seems to cause a problem. We usually give her her second dinner (30g kibble soaked in water) about 8pm and her first breakfast is usually 7am. Could she still need a small snack about 9pm? We often give her a slice of frozen carrot before bed as she likes it and it helps soothe her teeth.
