Dog Diarrhoea and blood 4 days - Vets no help

Help, my 6 year old cocker has had bloody Diarrhoea for almost four days. He is straining and after loose stools, he’s passing drops of blood.

took him to the vets yesterday and they were rubbish. They checked his Temp (fine) and gave us some generic Purina gastro food and stool hardener cream for cats and dogs. They said to “keep an eye on him” but nothing has changed. They charged us £90 for the visit and I felt like we didn’t get much help from them at all. they offered no insight into what it is. They didn’t offer any tests or advice what it could be, whereas I’m googling and everything is saying take him to the vets immediately. Which I have…

he is eating, the gastro food they gave us and rice and chicken. He’s drinking a bit. He is generally ok but feeling quite sorry for himself and his anus is all swollen and red.

he’s not eaten anything weird to bring this on. He seems like he’s trying to pass something with the straining. He also is scooting his bum on the floor, as if he’s irritated. I read online it could be anal gland infection but obviously need the vet to look into this.

does anyone have any experience or can advise what I should ask the vets to do? I want to get him some proper help and they just do not fill me with confidence.

im so worried about him and will take him back to vets tomorrow but I might ask to see another vet as the one yesterday seemed to be in training - she kept going next door to ask a colleague and was bringing us back questions. She did not offer us any tests or guidance, she felt so generic and clueless.

am I overreacting? Is the vet correct to say keep an eye on him and just give it some more time? Or should I insist they do something further?

That sounds like similar treatment my pup was given when he had bloody stools. Also antibiotics as they thought he could be parasitic,

I can’t imagine remember how long it took for things to get better.

Do you have pet insurance which offers free vet advice? If so, maybe worth contacting them for advice.

Riverlee · 30/08/2023 21:32

(However didn’t have swollen anus etc)

Spookymormonhelldream · 30/08/2023 21:34

Oh god I'd be so worried too. I'd be demanding tests at the vets tomorrow!
In the meantime do you have any Pro Kolin? It's a pet probiotic that seems to help my doodle whenever he has a dodgy bum (usually after eating something unmentioned in the park).
But yes tell the vets you really expect more analysis than 'keep an eye on him' 🙄. Maybe it's giardia (sorry not sure of spelling)? Maybe he's swallowed something that's damaging his intestines? Surely a blood test and X-ray would make sense?
Hope you get it sorted tomorrow x

andrainwillmaketheflowersgrow · 30/08/2023 23:31

I assume the cream they gave you is ProKolin?

It can take a few days to work so I would keep going with that - if the vet saw him yesterday and he's still eating and drinking I'd see how he is in the morning.

If he's no better then I'd take him to a different vet tbh.

My dog is very prone to this, he has colitis. The ONLY thing that works for us has been removing all food for 24 hours, which was at the advice of the vet, and then reintroducing chicken and rice for a few days and then gradually reintroducing his normal food.

lucya66 · 31/08/2023 07:16

Yes you’re right it’s pro Kolin. It says it in the ingredients. I’ve given him 3 days of that now (tue, we’d and thur) and will call vets today.

his anus is so sore, he’s obviously in a lot of pain. He’s not drank anything since yesterday daytime and he has bled non stop for three days. Lots of my house is covered in blood and poop as originally he was pooping outside, but now he’s doing it inside too. It’s as if he’s trying to show me how poorly he is by doing it everywhere and infront of me. I’m trying to usher him outside but when doing so his bum is leaking and dripping poo/blood everywhere all over the floors and up the walls sometimes.

i am so worried about how much blood he is losing there are piles of blood everywhere and all in the garden. It’s a lot.

:‘( my poor baba

Definitely take him to another vet for a second opinion, especially as he isn’t drinking now. Hopefully you get to the bottom of it quickly

My dog has been really unwell with a poorly tummy since Saturday so I can completely understand the stress of it all!

andrainwillmaketheflowersgrow · 31/08/2023 08:15

If he's not drinking then it's a veterinary emergency and he needs to see the vet as soon as they open really.

If your own vet aren't much good I would see if you can get him seen at another practise.

My boy had similar at the weekend. He had a jab to reduce the inflammation in his guts and seven days of mega strength probiotics. Starved him for 24 hours then four small meals a day of rice and white fish (vet said he could have potatoes and salmon too) and it would take a couple of days to calm down. I added natural yoghurt on day two. Yesterday he was just about back to normal and having some of the usual food mixed in.

My experience of Pro-Kolin is that it's useless when a dog is as irritated inside as yours is (and mine). It's cheaper on Amazon, btw.

ItsLovelyWeather · 31/08/2023 14:23

Please take him back, or take him to another vet.

I don't know if cockers are particularly prone to it but my boy (larger breed) has anal furunculosis/perianal fistulas. It will be very sore if it is and will definitely need meds.

Obviously I can't say that is for sure, and I hope it isn't, but I would definitely be getting a second opinion.

Good Luck!

Thanks everyone for your advice. I took him back today and we asked for a different vet. She was much better! she gave us antibiotics and more prokolin. She also emptied his anal glands which was awful as he screamed so much but I think now he can start to recover. We have to take stool samples over 3 days and antibiotics for 5 days.

feels so much better to know we actually have had a good vet help us today and reassure us. We’re feeding him boiled chicken and rice. He is so sad but I am more hopeful he is on the mend now with antibiotics.

Oh bless him, I'm glad you managed to speak to a good vet - hopefully he's well on the mend!

My beagle has had to have his anal glands done a few times - it takes three of us to hold him down lol.

Riverlee · 31/08/2023 20:48

wishing a speedy recovery and glad things are better today. That surgical procedure sounded horrific.
